Music Copyright and Music Departments

Do any of you have a booklet or advice sheet you hand out to your staff with regards to Music Copyright and use in school etc?

 

Basically just wondering if I can use it and "modify" it to get the basics across to mainly the music department. I.e. use of CD's, ripping music, bringing in "downloaded" MP3's, use of iPods etc etc.

Been through this many times myself even speaking to the PPL and PRS,

 

There is no cut and dried answer from what i determined.

 

The best I could get that was that if the media was from an original paid source and was not redistributed ( I.E. the pupils own copy ) then it was OK. But it was still ratehr grey.

 

We encouraged staff to find rights free media.

I don't have a worksheet, however like twin-turbo, I have spent a lot of time working through this.

 

What I've been told over the last few years is as follows:

 

To play music in a lesson, you don't need a license to do anything. However, normal law applies in the sense that you can't pirate things. So, music must be legally sourced.

 

However, that only covers playing. Not copying or storing.

 

If you want to copy music to use, you need licenses (PRS and PPL offer a 'Joint Manufacture' license). If you want to put it on a VLE or something, you'd need direct permission from the publisher/record company.

That's pretty rare, as most music copyright is owned by record companies rather than the artists.

The other note about the use of CR material is that only the piece being used should be kept and not an entire album.

 

And if you don't have a PPL, then it can only be used in the education arena and not in any event attended by the general public.

The Copy owner who is the lead Guitarist is our Junior tech,

 

Me: "Al, Do you want Emergance as your hold music?"

Alex: "Yeah...."

Me: "Can we have it too?

Alex: "Yeah!!!!"

 

It was during testing to get MOH working again after 2 telco installers had somewhere along the line managed to totaly fudge it up.

 

I would like to get some of the students work on for the rest of the school ratther than the royalty free junk that's on the phone system at the moment... But it's not going to happen.
