Windows 8 on VMWare

Hello all,

 

I want to try out Windows 8 and don't fancy it installing it on my physical HD but I'm having a few problems installing it on a VM. I've selected Windows 7 x64 as the VM template but when I power on the machine booting from the release preview ISO I've downloaded from Microsoft, it comes up with the "Loading files" progress bar but then just keeps restarting the VM. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this?

I'm also getting an error when trying to install Windows Server 2012, see below. Could it be the version of VMWare I'm using?

Probably, try virtual pc, virtualbox or just run it locally in another partition.

Have had it working in Virtual Box here - although IMO its a right pain and is best run on native hardware.

I've got Server 2012 installing at the moment, after some tweaks, on VirtualBox. I think my ISO was wrong with Windows 8. I'm re-downloading it and hoping it will work afterwards.

FWIW, I'm running Windows Server 2012 without any issues in VMware Workstation v8.0.4. Before you install the VMware Tools, you need to ensure you have the 'Accelerate 3D graphics' option checked in the VMs settings.

From your screenshot, it looks like you are using VMware Workstation 7?

I am using VMWare Workstation 7. It was what I had installed on my computer anyway, maybe it could be worth upgrading to VMware Workstation 8 then.

I'm really not having much luck with installing Windows 8. A new error now that I have got VMWare Workstation 8:

Does the SHA-1 hash of Windows8-ReleasePreview-64bit-English.iso match the one shown on the download page i.e. D76AD96773615E8C504F63564AF749469CFCCD57? If not, you will need to download the ISO again because it is corrupt.

My hash is wrong. Time to download the ISO again for a third time lol!

Just my 2p.... Didnt work for me on vSphere 4.1 (with all updates etc). Ta.

A little update:

 

It was worked fine with VMWare Workstation 8. I must say, I really do not like the Metro UI!

Didn't work for me on vSphere 4.1 (with all updates etc).

You'll have to upgrade to at least vSphere v5.0 to support Windows 8 or Server 2012.
