Office: Mac 2011 problem

Really hoping that somebody can help me with this problem.

 

We have currently started to restrict users access to applications through WorkGroup Manager, however, due to this I am getting some issues with Office:Mac 2011. When the user starts Word they get a message that states, "You don't have permission to use the application 'Microsoft AU Daemon'". I did get similar messages, but managed to find the .apps to allow the users to use them, but I cannot find anything regard this Microsoft AU Daemon, I know it relates to updates and in previous versions it was in the applications area.

Any reason you guys aren't using Pages?

 

In my experience managing any version of Office via workgroup manager is plagued with issues :/

We've had problems with this here before too. Just looking in my WGM app allow list and I have 'Alerts Daemon' listed in there, not sure if it's the same thing but worth a check! To find whatever is being blocked you'll need to open said application in Finder & go through the individual files & folders to find the specific file being blocked.. took me a while!

It is better to allow all applications, and prevent access to certain ones using WGM than it is to only allow listed applications. Blocking is infinitely more reliable than allowing (from experience, and from what Antonio Rocco told us on site!) and will probably solve your problem.

I recommend deciding what to block and allow using the folders sections of workgroup managers application section.

Hi guys,

 

Thanks for all your replies, I have recreated our blocking policy with the folder method and still getting the same error, it has improved things as this is the only one, instead of having all sorts relating to fonts, etc. Very weird, did some internet based research and in past versions there was an update application that could be added to the allowed policy and this would solve the error, been through all the folders relating to Office and there is no sign of this app, set updates to both manual and then automatic, this has not changed anything.

/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS

 

Though i recommend allowing the following folder in WGM:

 

/Library/Application Support/

 

or even

 

/Library

 

as only Admins can right to those folders as standard.

I allow the entire applications folder and then disallow the utilities folder and any other folders that you may wish to remove access to i.e. server admin tools if they are installed.
