teejay Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 (edited) RS deliveries take about 10 days, they just turn up in the normal post, don't know who the courier is though. Chris_Cook Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I ordered from RS mid june and got a 6 week estimate. I had ordered after my allocated week, so I think it was put to the end of the list. I managed to damage my first one (from farnell), and break both the usb ports and the network ports. The desktop was quite slow, but I found it usable. As you say, when they get hardware rendering working properly it should be much better. I've had audacity and other programs running, and they've shown quake 3 running as well. I've managed to make sip phone calls using linphone. So the device itself is fairly powerful.

As a desktop replacement then yes it's slow at the moment for running X and you have to be careful how many programs you have open, but it's still quite usable, especially if you overclock it which is perfectly acceptable as long as you don't over-volt it as that voids the warranty. I have mine running at 900Mhz for the CPU and 500Mhz for the memory, perfectly stable. As a device to hack around with it's great and I quite like the fact it's not a speed demon and limited in memory, that adds to the challenge:p Compared to old school stuff I used to use it's a speed demon anyway. Have a play with the console and you'll find it's pretty good, also have a look at some of the XBMC distros as a media centre, they're getting quite impressive now.

sted Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 the whole xwin was just so slow. One of these days i will try a n other distro (rs aparently cant count to 1 so sent me 2 4gb cards lol). It just put me off so much i just threw it on a box and cba with it atm
FragglePete Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Got mine fired up today - found an old SD card, using my phone charger and plugged it into my main TV at home. Really does take me back; running a computer on a domestic TV, just like the ZX-81 and Spectrums. Stuck the initial Debian Squeeze on initially and got it working, started the GUI and fired up Scratch. My 12 year old daughter has just hijacked it and playing with Scratch. Cool. Pete
Fazza Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 After waiting weeks and weeks and weeks for my invitation to purchase a Raspberry Pi I foolishly assumed that when I got an invite they actually had some to sell me! Seven weeks delivery time. Seven weeks! Needless to say I've cancelled my order as it's basically a complete and utter shambles.

Had a play with the BETA Fedora image, but it wasn't really stable so I switched over to the Debian image.

chilbs Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I ordered mine from RS on friday and was given an 11 week lead time. Have looked at Farnell today and it says they are opening up for general orders on the 5th and have a 4 week lead time. Have not cancelled the order just in case the Farnell site is wrong/optimistic and in the meantime I can play with one borrowed from a guy at work. Chilbs
