Backup Software

Hi we currently use livestate to back up all our schools student and staff work, aswell as sims...

 

 

Now as symantec livestate reads the drive at a sector level (i.e. the 1's and 0's) we can backup everything, including the SQL database, while its in use.

 

We bought a copy in october 2006 for £260

we now have another two servers we want to buy but the best price i can get is £400. because "symantec have put the prices up,, again"

 

Does anyone know of any other GOOD backup software which will do the same job as livestate?????

 

As its abit pricey and i dont want to go back to writing scripts with XCOPY

We use Veritas Backup Exec here, Does the job, Not sure how much it cost us.

We use Backup Exec here too.

 

At my previous place, we used Legato Networker then moved onto CA BrightStor Arcserve.

EMC Retrospect here. Dammed easy to use and the 'Proactive' backup function is great. Forget scheduling, it backs up as and when it can. Coupled with a 10 lto tape Tandberg storage array it really is tops.

I think im prollys best off sticking with livestate and grugingly paying a stupid amount more for the same product i bought a year ago...

Do Backup Exec or Arcserve allow you to back up individual Exchange mailboxes?

Backup exec system recovery 7 does...

 

It does alot of things its fantastic infact,

you can mount volume sets as a drive, and then share it out to your network if you wanted too (read only of course) ,

backup without stopping any services,

+ recover to OTHER hardware

ie. RAID 5 scsi windows 2003 > IDE or SATA desktop with one big disk. and completely diff hardware

EMC Dantz retrospect is bloody afwul! Terribly slow, unnecessaryily complicated setup and restore process.

 

The only thing I use it for now is SQL, because that's the only bit that ntbackup can't do.

Backupexec all the way.

 

It's simple, reliable, and restores files/directories/databases/emails/complete systems in minutes.

 

It can restore individual mail boxes or even individual emails from exchange no problem, it does need an agent on the exchange server though.

It may not be for everyone but when you have quite a few servers and drives to backup, and you've worked out its quirks, its a very reliable piece of software

We currently use Symantec 10d, but this month will be moving to Acronis True Image Server with Universal Restore. This means we can restore a server image to any hardware (doesn't have to be the same setup as the original) whilst getting a dead server back online, and if we want we can also restore to a VM and run the server normally.

 

Managed to get a good discount from Acronis. Of course it also backs up normally, so it isn't just imaging software.
