Backup internet connection / failsafe?

Hello,

 

We are about to move over to Progresso from Facility CMIS. The deal has already been signed and the decision making / running of is not under my remit. I digress...

 

I understand that it is fully web based and hosted by Progresso outside. Whilst our CPSN Internet connection is fairly reliable, there will be the odd occasion when this drops out for 5 minutes, or half a lesson or at worst a couple of hours. Are any of you using backup Internet connections, or even HSDPA routers to get online when your traditional means fails?

Possibly just a bog standard internet ASDL line and some software to manage a failover?

 

depending on the router supplied by CPSN and if you have control over it you might be able to get an ADSL card for the router to manage the fail over - this is standard practice on a lot of lease lines.

We have no control over it (nor over our switches). I will see if our LA have any best practice ways of doing this as I doubt we are the first in this position. I just want to make sure we have a plan B, rather than things going wrong then retrospectively coming up with a plan as is all too common in schools...well mine anyway!

Well yes they would be the best place to start then - they may be able to provide adsl failover if you alreadybjave fibre broadband.

 

Do you use you own prozy server?

We have a seperate ADSL line for failover issues, this will allow critical staff access to the Internet in a controlled manner should the Internet fail and allow us to get to Progresso

 

Progresso Mobile is also very useful so most smart phones should be good for registering students should the net fail.

No but a number of school phones do exist in the building and a number of us have large data allowances and in an emergency I won't mind using a bit of that to solve an emergency.
