[sims] Creating teaching group profile/context sheets in SIMS

Hi

 

We wish to use SIMS to print off sheets for teachers which have the following information on them, to assist themwith their planning. Has anyone managed to do this (and how!)?

 

Class profile sheets for every teacher/every group, showing:

• Name

• Vulnerable group membership: EAL, FSM, CLA, YC, BME, Mobile, Service

• Prior Attainment Band: U/M/L

• Gender

• Previous levels/grades (from previous academic year) – maybe VA on there would be good too

• Last year’s % attendance

• KS2 Test Scores

• Target for year and key stage

• Medical info as necessary e.g. allergies, diabetes, asthma, colour-blindness

• SEN status

• a note if applicable stating ‘See SIMS’ if there is an urgent family/social/personal note

Some of these are easy, and some of them harder. The select additional columns functionality in AM covers some of them, but some would require appropriate Aspects to be created in AM first (f the data was not already in the system)and populated with data.

I think you might struggle with the Medical info, and also with Last Years attendance - attendance to date in the current year is easy to do, but from a previous acacademic year, I am not sure how you would do that.

The alternative is to use the Student List Reporting functionality. This would be an easy way of doing hardcopy lists with most of what you want on it - its easier to get the medical information on from here but you would struggle with attendance and

assessment data.

I use command reporter to run reports from sims to gather all the data (as xml outputs), (student basic info, sen,fsm, attendance, behavior and assessment). Then use excel templates to create a set of profile sheets for staff.

 

Staff have been very receptive to them and find them useful, rather than looking solely at lists of information in assessment manager for example.

 

I'm confident that any information can be added into these templates to suit the needs of other schools.

Im thinking of creating a standard template and set of reports for sims, would anyone be interested in trialing it on another site?

@pubgrub277 Yes, that's awesome. @Wallgo as @Linfit said some info is hard, other is easy. I've got a basic profile sheet they user per pupil to aid handover at classes in primary at end of year, but it's hard to get some data on in a report, it would take ages to run.

It's definitely possible to get something though if experiment.

Sorry, Ive been out of the office a couple of days.

 

I'm busy doing a write up on how i create these, along with the reportdefs for sims and the excel sheet. The big problem i can see is the assessment data aspects in sims will vary from school to school.

 

How would people feel with importing aspects specifically to make these sheets work? or would a cut and paste for the assesment data be ok for everyone?

I would love to test them at our site.... these are great! I'd also be very interested to know how you go from the .xml output to the excel template. Any info would be great.

 

In excel use the data from other sources option on the data tab (office 2007/2010). using the "from xml" option. This allows you to map the xml headers to columns in you spread sheet. You can update the xml file anytime then just click refresh all (again on the data tab) in excel an it pulls in the new info.

 

This way you can set up your spread sheet template and have almost live data being pulled form sims using commandreporter.

Yep, i think if you describe the link from the aspects in report def to the spreadsheet if that's even required, each user can redefine their own report def with their own custom aspects.

Would love to have a closer look - at the moment I end up pulling the volatile stuff from SIMs and manually lining it up with the historic data in excel ...

However, I would need some guidance because the phrase 'command reporter' is rather scary looking.

Count me in for these as well, I don't need your aspects though, as I'd try to make them work with the ones we have here, but your end product is pretty much exactly what I'd like to provide to my teachers, and look far better than any of the individual reports I have gone through.

 

tieing the templates to XML is a fantastic idea too thanks for that tip.

Just wanted to say that the layout looks excellent.

 

Can I ask if your using a dynamic reference sheet in excel to lookup the data from sims exported marksheets or a report? i.e. is the excel document and features function freely from the sims data, until a reference sheet is updated.

 

As I would be interested in looking at this but more from an exams point of view.
