joys of Terastation AD connection

im the new proud owner of a 2TB terastation pro 2 i have so far had it conencted to AD and so far have had no luck at all with user folder permissions..

 

we are running server 2000 so its pretty easy to join onto the domain

 

i have created a share through the "shared folders" tab i then enable folder restrictions add the user accounts to the test folders then apply it all

 

wait a few mins then try an open the folders (using the usernames i granted access too) and i get is a log on box asking for user name an password?! not resolving domain accounts??

 

another thing was on the initial connect to the domain:

 

netbios name ? domainname.ds ? basically what is in network id in system properties

dns/realm name ? same as netbios name?

I've not bothered with the AD integration on mine and being 2003 nativ eit probably wouldn't work anyway.

 

Just use the built in stuff to set up the security and create a username/password for it then specify that to your backup software or create an ftp username/password.

we were going to use it as a place to put redirected data (my docs) from off the domain.

 

so will be needing domain access

Send it back and buy a DriveStation Quattro 2TB. Hang this off of a PC / Server and then create shares on the windows box. The terastation is a pretty well locked down linux box in a windows world - you sacrifice NTFS and the easyness of creating the shares and access for what? the cost of a drivestation is comparable to terastation anyways. Mine was about £550 ish.

I have a drive station quattro 2tb running as a moodle data store on my dell pe1950 centos box - works lovely - there is also one on my windows 2003 symantec backupexec box. both seem to work well

oh no they new account was only used to connect the terastation to the domain as we were using the domain administrator account to set everything up it conflicts with the built in admin account on the box

Did I not read somewhere that there is a 1000 user AD limitation on this box?

Hence it may have limitations in large school sites.

 

I can see how the USB device could be more suitable for some purposes, but then the device becomes Direct Attached Storage and not NAS and the purpose of NAS is to make the data store independent of the host server and off load some of the many tasks we seem to be dumping on our critical servers.

this was the reason behind us installing it, fingers crossed it seems happy enough

 

our domain is only tiny but space is really limitied and the company are as tight as ducks bums so they wouldnt splash out on new fs or even bigger drives for the existing one

 

only pains i have found so far is that shares have to have the permission set at the parent level which propergate down so looks like im goign to have millions n milliosn of shares lol

Would it be possible to do it like this...

 

Create a share and set the following permissions

Administrators: Full

System: Full

Creator Owner: Full (subfolders & files only)

Domain Users: Read, List, Create Folders (this folder only)

 

Now set up folder redirection to \\nasbox\share

- Tweak the 'grant full permissions' accordingly

 

The folders will be created when the user logs on and the permissions should be correct.

This is thoroughly annoying, ive been trying to get this Terastation Pro 2 to work but it just refuses to do what i want. I tried connecting it to AD and it did connect (even though the first time i did it, it crashed and it wouldnt let me log into the web interface.. forcing me to rebuild the whole thing) but with the user limitation i moved it back to work group. Now all im trying to do is to get a share to have restricted access that i could map a drive to, which i have setup on the web interface but when i try to get to the share it kicks up all kinds of errors. help :!:

what firmware version are you running?

 

2000 or 2003 domain?

 

how are you joining it to the domain? this is where i was having problems, by joininig using the user name "administrator" it conflicts with the tera stations built in admin account

 

so i created buff_admin with domain admin rights and have never had problems after that

Ive played with v1.12 and v1.05 with no joy, and its 2003.
