Ruckus Access Points with Zone Director

Hi All

 

When setting up access points with a managed switch to people find it best to let the APs and control unit sit on DHCP, on a static IP off the curriculum network ie 192.168.0 or on a static address on the curriculum network (perhaps reserved under DHCP or outside the scope)?

I've just let all of our APs pick up DHCP addresses - the Zone Director gets a static and thats all I use to manage the APs - you can find the AP's address from the ZD but in the 3 years we've had Ruckus I've had very few issues with this.

And just to be awkward... a seperate VLAN with different IPs and the ZoneDirector/APs having static IPs assigned. I'm guessing we use ours differently mind.

 

It depends what you will be doing ultimately... if you plan to have multiple SSIDs/VLANs then you need a slightly more complicated/secure setup to begin with.

Similar to Ric, we have the Zone Director & APs on our Management VLAN using DHCP reservations for the APs and static address for the ZD. We then have 3 SSIDs tagged to different data VLANs.

I used to run with DHCP on the AP's but had an issue that's made me move them to static. I have several rural schools that have flaky power. In the event of a power outage that outlasts our UPS, once power is restored the local domain controller takes longer to boot than the AP's do so they aren't able to get a lease right away. Setting them to static they are up and running much faster after power comes back up.
