Moving Oliver Library System

We have Oliver from Softlink installed on an old Server on svr 2003. I want to move the install onto 2008 R2 on a new VM. How easy or hard is it to do the install and move the database? Softlink say that Oliver will run fine in a VM so that should be ok.

 

Softlink have quoted £350+VAT to do this for us but I am wondering if I could do it myself?

 

Anyone done this?

If you're going to move it onto a VM, why not capture the current running Server 2003 system as a VM? Then you don't need to bugger about with moving the database etc and all of your network settings i.e. IP and machine name stay the same

I did think of that originally but I thought if its easy I could upgrade to 2008 R2 and reinstall - kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I may do the P2V if I cant do the upgrade myself. Dont fancy paying £350+VAT

Which version of Oliver are you running? The newer one that runs off SQL or the older one that uses DCB files? We are still on the older one and a reinstall, from what I recall, was really easy

As long as your existing database is already SQL then it is really easy. I did ours in an afternoon including moving from an old physical box to new VM without an issues.

Not sure which version as I am not at the school but I know it uses SQL.

Any notes on how you did it? Is it as simple as building OS in VM, installing SQL, Installing Oliver and importing DB?

Yes what we did was;

1) Install 2008 R2,

2) Patch it up to date

3) Install SQL Express 2008 R2,

4) Backup the database from the old server

5) Restore the database on the new server

6) Check for any further Windows updates

7) Run the oliver installer, pointing it at the sql database when it requests the location.

 

It was pretty simple and just seemed to work.

Figured it would be something like that, we really need to upgrade ours to the SQL editions

The softlink guys have a PDF guide as to how to do a move - pressure them for it (we did and got it).

If you have any issues at all after the move just say 'it stopped working' (again as we did) and they will fix it under your current support contract.

When the technician remoted in to do the move (yes I paid the money, just didn't have the time) he told me that Oliver would not run on Server 2008 R2, so I had to rebuild the server to 2003.

I know it's an old post but I was wondering if anyone had the setup guide for the SQL side of oliver. I don't think the install guy wants to give me a copy but our sql is failing on the install and i'd like to try an have ago myself as he has to interview some people today.

I have. I'll dig it out later. I had to do a server 2003 migration in the summer. They wanted $$$$ to do it. Saved ourselves loadsa dosh doing it myself
