Joining iMacs to domain without OSX server

i want a mac server fighting the network manager to get one as we have 40ish macs joining us at the begining of the summer

 

Apologies for going OT but this sort of thing really bugs me. We had an ICT Teacher on interview last week and they mentioned that their network manager refused to touch any Macs, meaning that she had to set up her own network for the Macs - as a teacher. Now, any network manager is there to support the network, not just MS OS. A Mac, Linux box, whatever is just a computer when it comes down to it.

 

You wouldn't get teachers refusing to teach certain children because they speak with a northern accent instead of a London accent. Bad analogy but you get the idea.

I was actually one of the people the OP is talking about(having left last month) that was not keen on the uptake of them. Partly for the fact i don't like apple but the main reason was the justification in why they wanted them. The main one was "Well xxx college has just got an entire suite".

 

Well that great for XX college but unless you can give me the justification to spend 4x the amount a windows desktop would cost then they where not having them. Soon enough the properly researched what they wanted to do and came back with a plan as to what they wanted to use them for and they got there 7 or so Imacs and a Mac Pro.

 

Are you able to run apple server as a VM? Or do apple frown apon this?

you can run as a vm so long as its on apple branded hardware i believe....

This was discussed earlier. VMWare ESXi supports OS X Server, but only on XServe 3.1.

cheers for all the help so far I have managed to bind the machines and get them to display the user areas properly. Is it possible to set up different profiles types? E.g a profile for students with limited access and then another for staff with access to system settings etc?

Like it or like it not Macs are marching forwards. We have twelve various Macs now, about the same number of iPads and 8 iPods. Our SMT took note of my pleas and not only purchased a Mini Mac Server but also bought in EduMac to set it up - best bit of expenditure I have been involved with as it's really simplified control of these devices - indeed it HAS given me control whereas before they were a constant pain.
