free php server needed

does anyone know were i can get a free php server for my php forum

 

or could any one lend me half of there server please for i could put my forum on

You've recently setup VMWare. If you leave your PC on at home, why not setup a VM with a server on it? It'll give you a good start in web servers. Always a good learning curve.

 

That or you could run it from your desktop PC using XAMPP (assuming you're windows).

First Callum I edited title of post as 'a' was very descriptive.

 

Maybe best thing to get help on software issue post new thread as this is different issue to this thread.

 

But make sure that you include name of php forum software using (and version) and where in install you are having trouble with.

 

As lots of php forum software out there all different.

I have a webserver, if you want I can set up a forum for you. As I run a hosting company in my spare time.

 

I'll do it for free, always heappy to help out a fellow edugeek.

Just PM if interested. You can have log in to the control panel as well (cPanel in this case).

 

The software available is phpbb.

an easy way into .php is to set up a LAMP server.

I personally use Fedora, which is RedHat but free.

Then setup webmin, which is an easy and effective way to setup the .php and Apache servers.

 

You can setup webmin on a virtual linux client, if thats how your using your server.

You might want to specify what your forum is about and what actual type of forum (phpbb2/3, invision, vbulletin, nuke, etc... ) it is..

 

In terms of cost though, bear in mind that "free" usually means, no cash, but lots of downtime, loss of data/hair, etc...

 

It's worth looking for something like this:

http://www.flump.net/hosting_bronze.php and adding the mysql DB for an extra £1 a month (£4 total).

 

Knowing the hosts founder from years ago they tend to be quite a good host and will save you that hair

If it's just a small forum why not just use your own home connection and PC. A virtual machine is a good idea using VMWare or something similar.

 

I use VMWare with XP on, and WAMP. Just a few clicks and your set up to go. I don't have a static IP address so I also use some software called no-ip (Google it). They give you a domain name (i.e. something.no-ip.net) which forwards to your IP. You need a bit of software from them (free) which checks your IP every so often and changes the records at no-ip if it changes. Then you can just forward your current domain name (something.co.uk) to the one they give you (something.no-ip.net).

hi russ i did pm ric_ to change this title as my evil baby clicked the mouse

when i was about to put the title in.

If you would like a free PHP and MySQL have a little look at http://www.freehostia.com . I've set my guild website up on there using Dragonfly CPC (like nuke) and it works a charm and so far no down time.

Yeah I agree WAMP is better. It also includes phpMyAdmin for admining your MySQL databaseage
