EN4CER Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Dear All, Strange question.. Our IT and Network support guy is great, comes in each week and looks after our network, servers, computers and everything else ICT related. We are about to renew his contract, but need to compare with 2 other companies. His work is great and we really want to keep him. Please can someone recommend two really expensive IT/Network support companies ??? Also, what is the going hourly rate for this type of support? Many thanks in advance. EN4
glennda Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Also, what is the going hourly rate for this type of support? How long is a piece of string! can go from anywhere between £15-mega bucks! but there are a few people here that might be able to provide you with what they charge.
soveryapt Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 If you're renewing his contract and you like him, why do you need comparisons? Surely, his contract will have in it a renew clause, I know mine does for schools. In terms of what's the hourly rate, well that all depends on the tech in question really. For instance, myself, I normally charge £25-£30/hour for schools, but the school I'm in now, because I moved from being employed to being contract services I charge a lesser rate to be more in line with what my pay scale was but also based on knowing what my own bottom line is. I know techs who charge £40-£50/hour for school support, so it all depends on the tech in question really and the exact role that you're expecting them to fulfil. But I refer back to my opening, if you want to keep him, then really there shouldn't be any need for doing that additional leg work, as why look into other companies if you're happy with the one you have? Seems a little excessive.
EN4CER Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 We have been told by the Council we need to get two other quotes as well Think our guy is £55 PH, but he's excellent and always there when we need him...!

dhicks Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Please can someone recommend two really expensive IT/Network support companies ??? Capita.
hit Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Get some quotes from the 24/7 companies, they always add a hefty premium due to the fact they are always open.
featured_spectre Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 does it need to be a register ed trader...if not...i can knock you one up
soveryapt Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Capita. HAHAHA.. or, you could even ask the LA for a quote themselves to see how it measures up (if they're anything like mine, then he's probably still cheaper as they seem on a par with Capita .. lol)
LiamH Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Isn't this a bit dodgy? I'm sure the person doing the work at the moment is very good but with all the cuts everyone is having to make you shouldn't really be protecting people that charge over the norm from the public sector funds. Granted i find it if often better to go for a slightly higher priced option that you know is reliable compared to cheap and not so cheerful approach, but looking for a better priced comparable service should be done anyway. *ducks*
2097 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 obviously also depends on what he does . I know a lot of contract people who " keep the school going " with no real development . For £55 per hour , cant be that much more expensive to get some one in full time , with ambition to drive the ICT forward.
featured_spectre Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 my day rate is between £100-300 depending on the work...IT or Gardening...same pricing.
Netwacky87 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 How often is he in? One day a week? It all depends on how often he is in compared to getting someone full time (if they are needed)
X-13 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Think our guy is £55 PH, but he's excellent and always there when we need him...! Damn... I should become a IT support contractor. That's 5 times what I'm paid [approx].
pooley Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Our LA charge the schools £185 per day, I charge £180 per day.
GrumbleDook Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 It is or about price, but about value for money. Asking for other expensive quotes is not a good way of doing it and might not be in the school's best interest.

Asking for other expensive quotes is not a good way of doing it and might not be in the school's best interest. I'd agree with that, it doesn't seem very professional and could get you into trouble if you were found out to be deliberately loading the quotes in your favour.
