DVDs and Blu-rays will now carry two unskippable 10 second government warnings

When will Hollywood get a clue?

DVDs and Blu-rays will now carry two unskippable government warnings

You know those FBI warning messages that appear at the beginning of DVDs and Blu-ray discs? They're getting an upgrade—and they're multiplying.

The US government yesterday rolled out not one but two copyright notices, one to "warn" and one to "educate." Six major movie studios will begin using the new notices this week.

[...]

Will the two screens be shown back to back? Will each screen last for 10 seconds each? Will each screen be unskippable? Yes, yes, and yes.

An ICE spokesman tells me that the two screens will "come up after the previews, once you hit the main movie/play button on the DVD. At which point the movie rating comes up, followed by the IPR Center screen shot for 10 secs and then the FBI/HSI anti-piracy warning for 10 secs as well. Neither can be skipped/fast forwarded through."

The idea isn't to deter current pirates, apparently (the new scheme requires all legal purchasers to sit through 20 seconds of warnings each time they pop in a film, but will be totally absent from pirated downloads and bootlegs). It's to educate everyone else. As ICE Director John Morton announced in a statement yesterday, "Law enforcement must continue to expand how it combats criminal activity; public awareness and education are a critical part of that effort." Are they trying to give people more reasons to download rather than buy. As said it wont be there on pirate disks why annoy legitimate customers. Drm is pointless look at avatar they upped the drm and it was still copied but people who bought it in some cases couldnt watch it

I don't advocate piracy but this gives another good reason to watch a pirate over an original. There are a couple of DVD's I have (bought) that I've ripped and removed the crap from like this.

I think it's hilarious that adding this sort of things makes people want to watch priated content to avoid it. They really like shooting themselves in the foot!

It's clearly designed by people who don't know what else to do, so they're doing the same thing as before, only more of it. It's like they've convinced themselves that the reason a deaf person can't hear them is because they're not shouting loud enough.

durp.

Piracy IS a victimless crime. [in and of itself]

The piracy may be funding something else, that's a whole OTHER thing.

If people trafficing is funded by piracy, piracy doesn't suddenly inherit the victims of people trafficing. It doesn't work like that.

Tell me about it. My copy of Avatar only seems to want to play on days of the week with an 'r' in them :(

Say whatever you like about iTunes, at least stuff you buy or rent from it doesn't have all that crap embedded in it. Netflix doesn't either and if I remember correctly the Lovefilm streaming service doesn't.

Pocahontas is better.

Nah, it's just DRM'd to within an inch of its life and bad quality.

[Judgement based on iTunes videos I've seen. May be content specific issues.]

The picture quality of the films I've downloaded from them have been more than adequate and the DRM isn't much of an issue for a rented film. With a film you buy, you can play it back on up to five authorised computers and on as many AppleTVs or other iOS devices as you like from within your own network. BluRays have pretty stringent DRM too.

[cut apple reference, as I have 0 apple products. Also, no BluRay.]

I currently have about 30-odd computers in various stages of useability. 7 are set up and working.

Out of curiosity, how do they tell what is authorised and what isn't?

Absolutely pointless. I automatically rip any DVD's I buy and put them on to my media server - I can be watching my film of choice in under 10 seconds that way rather than sitting through a load of irritating piracy warnings and adverts for "new" films (they're already long forgotten films on the vast majority of my collection!), then fiddling around with menus which have an increasing tendency to give away major plot points in their pointless background clips.

When will they learn that punishing those of us who abide by the law is never going to help?

Thei rony is, if they just gave up on DRM and accepted that every single software based encryption will be hacked, they could save billions of dollars, sell the BluRays/DVDs at half the price and less people would bother to pirate!

I'd like to see them try and make a conviction on it - I'm sure over half the court room (probably judge included) will have MP3 players chock full of ripped CD's!

I'm wondering why no one has tried to haul MS or iTunes into court for facilitating piracy by including a rip function in their software. If its good enough for TPB and Megaupload......
