Mako Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 So, there doesn't seem to be much activity on the old Geek about this release. How many of you are looking forward to the anticipated sequel to one of the better no-subscription-model games ever released? And how many of you participated in the beta event last weekend? I have already established my guild for this game, currently comprised of remnants from both my RIFT and SW:TOR guild. SW:TOR was horrendously underwhelming and player numbers are declining rapidly. I'm making this thread as a discussion point for this game, and to highlight the fact that there will be a UK-based guild for casual players for those of you who have real-lives (like myself) and instead play for fun. Of course that doesn't mean you can't be completely hardcore too. Shameless plug - Ebonhawke Falcons | A Guild Wars 2 Guild. Roster looks bleak but it's up to members to upload their own characters, and many are still undecided given that they've only had one chance to play.
Arcath Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I'm really looking forward to this, played the beta weekend last weekend and once it actually started working reliably it was pretty good. I really hope its not like other recent MMOs where my group migrates back to WoW and cancels their subscription.
HMCTech Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Some of the lets play videos on youtube looked good. I would only play for the large scale pvp battles involving forts and castles, they looked the most appealing. I also like the ideo of events rather than quests where things happen as you are walking along. Wasted too much money buying TOR for £50 and paying for three months worth of subscription only to be very bored very quickly and that was my first MMO in 5 years. Not sure I want to waste they money again though.
Mako Posted May 1, 2012 Author Posted May 1, 2012 (edited) Remember Guild Wars 2 doesn't have a subscription model, it's free to play after purchase. The random events were fun and reminded me a lot of RIFT (same principle, a number of players in an area would randomly trigger an event and they have to work together to conquer the challenge). The random events I did involved saving a farm from raiding bandits, escorting guards/caravans/mules, defeating a particular boss (Wasp Queens, Ettins etc). From what I played it was mostly "Kill this" or "Defend that". I didn't venture far out of the starting area (only reached level 8) but I'm sure more challenging and exciting things await. The PvP was great, by the way. I didn't get chance to do the World vs World but my guildies were raving about it. I wrote a lengthy "review" on my guild's forum which I could post here but it could be a case of TL : DR. It's quite a wall of text. Edited May 1, 2012 by Mako
Rawns Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I had the original Guild Wars, it was my first dabble in the world of MMOs. I gave up not too long after, mainly as I had no clue about what an MMO was and what I was meant to be doing in game, plus I knew no-one who played so spent most time playing with the AI companions and getting slaughtered. Gave up in the end, but now have dabbled in many more MMO's since then, and this is free to play, I'll be very tempted to get involved.
ZeroHour Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I tried the beta for a little over the weekend but I was a bit underwhelmed tbh after playing Tera.
siuko Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Played the beta at the weekend - and even though there were login issues and quite bad fps I still absolutely loved it!! Cant wait for release Even gone as far as buying GW1 today to try for the Hall of Monuments rewards for GW2 lol
Valentine Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I was very impressed with the GW2 beta weekend just because they are trying to do something different with the genre. SWtOR failed because it didn't innovate with the MMO aspects of it, much the same could be said of Rift although i still love the talent system. Tera has a chance too after playing the beta, the combat system is very innovative but the questing and grinding is from a 10 year old game. I was certain before playing the beta i was going to play an Elementalist but after trying every class i really have no idea now, they all seem good fun....
Pete10141748 Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I'm very tempted to make this my first MMO after seeing it in action at Eurogamer Expo last year and the 'letsplay' videos since then, together with it not having a monthly fee. It will mainly depend on who else I know if going to be playing, I know at least one person who will likely get it.
siuko Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I played all the classes except for Thief and Mesmer... I think my favourites were the Elementalist and Ranger The biggest thing for me was the environments and the cities... OMG to how beautiful and big and lively they are.... and not dead lifeless mazes like SWTOR! Exploring in GW2 will be fun!!
Mako Posted May 1, 2012 Author Posted May 1, 2012 I played Elementalist. I tend to be stubborn and stick to one class, usually a ranged magic class. All I can say is that, overall, I enjoyed it. The way that your skillset changes based on your weapon type was refreshing. Seems like we do have some interest here. I just thought I'd throw it out there in case people are planning on buying it and would be worried about playing solo. I have, in the past, had the great @ZeroHour in my RIFT guild (Invictus). We promote a relaxed feel, and the website linked in the OP will become more lively with future beta events and the road to release. If you're thinking about getting GW2, be sure to consider the Ebonhawke Falcons! Everything you should need to know is on the website. I'm looking forward to the next beta weekend.
Dave84 Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I only managed to play for a few hours at the weekend but I loved every minute of it. Lets hope we can play asura and sylvari on the next beta weekend
siuko Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Well anyone thinking of trying GW1 to get the HoM rewards for GW2.... Don't! lol I thought GW1 might be similar to GW2 in game play / movement etc and just have rubbish graphics.... Sadly it is showing its age a great deal - and if you are used to more modern MMO (wow, swtor, gw2 etc) then you will probably find it rather clunky NOW WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO PLAY WHILE WAITING FOR GW2!!!! :D :D
bondbill2k2 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I payed GW1 as my first MMO game and really enjoyed it, a few years later I played WOW but that only lasted about 4months before decided against it taking up too much time and the monthly fee were too much in the end. Looking forward to GW2 something different from shooting or racing on my xbox and I'm yet to find an RTS I really like in recent years beside RUSE
Mako Posted May 11, 2012 Author Posted May 11, 2012 Stress Test coming on Monday May 14th from 6pm to 1am GMT for those of you who pre-ordered. If you played in the previous Beta, your characters will not have been wiped. Mako Posted May 30, 2012 Author Posted May 30, 2012 I'm going to shamelessly bump this thread by showing something I'm immensely proud of. My guild (see the OP) has been selected as the community spotlight guild for this week over at Guild Wars 2 Beta News | GWI. Here's the link: Community Spotlight: Ebonhawke Falcons, PvX | Guild Wars 2 Beta News Source - Guild Wars Insider Here's what the editor of the article had to say when I questioned him; Great website for prospective members to look through and the strong community backing of being part of an active guild network instead of just a single guild got you the nomination. Beyond that, the staff voted with your guild along with the other hopefuls and you got the win this week. I think the fact that you're PvX appealed to both the PvP and PvE fanatics on the staff too. (you didn't split your demographic) If any of you geekers are going to be playing GW2, I once again recommend my gaming community. I don't bite! Honest!
apeo Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Gratz, I'm looking forward to GW2 and I'm currently building a rig for it (I need a new PC anyway). I couldnt take part in the Beta weekend because my current rig is too old/slow . I may take you up on your offer as the guild im in is dead and the only active players are myself and my brother. Amusingly I'm guild leader because I was so active at one point but I must admit that even I've stopped playing right now.
Dave84 Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 If any of you geekers are going to be playing GW2, I once again recommend my gaming community. I don't bite! Honest! I might take you up on that offer too I was free this weekend so managed to play the GW2 beta quite a bit. Got a chance to try all the professions but played Guardian and Ele the most. Absolutely stunning game, and it looked like they ironed out most of the issues as I had no login or error 7 problems this time. One thing is for sure, my Radeon 4870 isn't good enough for the game as it couldn't cope very well with the big battles. A new graphics card is needed before release I think!
Valentine Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Spent quite a lot of time trying PvE and PvP content this weekend. The most fun I had was when myself and 3 friends all created Mesmers with almost identical names and appearances and then joined a Warzone (or whatever GW2 calls them) as a team. This basically meant every time there was a big group fight there were 16 identical looking characters and no-one knew what to actually kill (we won every game doing this).
Mako Posted June 12, 2012 Author Posted June 12, 2012 Nice @apeo and @Dave84 . I was away at Download this weekend so sadly I missed the Beta, but my guild slogged away at the content. Feedback from my girlfriend was that everything went smoothly and they all played well together, even though their servers kept crashing and when they did, my PC froze. It's still quite buggy but looking like a good game. If you're interested just check the links in the OP. We're always looking for more folks! And questions just PM me or shoot a message over the bow of my forum.

[i'm not jealous or nothing... This shade of green just happens to suit me.] But, yeah... I've been looking at GW2. But, the only thing I have for it is a crappy laptop. So, I'd probably have to get a new one... I also can't be bothered with sorting out the rewards... I started doing it on a new character, but then got overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff I have to do. [i haven't even finished the story...]
siuko Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Indeedy!!!!!!!!! What fantastic news Only a few months away... lets just hope they can get the engine with much higher fps.. then it will be FANTASTIC
X-13 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Not sure if awesome or not... 3 days after my birthday is pretty awesome, but I still need something new to play it on...
apeo Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 (edited) Not sure if awesome or not... 3 days after my birthday is pretty awesome, but I still need something new to play it on... I've been planning a new build for a while now, and with this news, it means I have a deadline now. I was hoping that prices for parts would go down but sadly not, infact some of it has gone up.. 3770k keeps going up in price. I did however get a Samsung 830 256 GB SSD for £140, which isnt bad. EDIT: Hey if your birthday is 3 days after then surely that means you can play on your birthday with prepurchase 3 day headstart access? Edited June 29, 2012 by apeo
