Windows XP - Losing GPO

Hi all,

 

Once again we have a problem where an xp computer just looses all of its restrictions and doesnt pick up any gpo's.

 

the computer has not been moved in AD and all Policys have stayed in the same place, the students have gpo's restricting them aswell, which havent been moved or changed.

 

its just on random computers that they loose all gpo's, only the H:\ Drive is mapped, they have access to Control Pannel, C:\ Drive ect, they cant change major things on the computer but they can access them.

 

The only fix we have found is to WDS the computer but then a couple of weeks later with another computer, not connected with the last, we get a call from a teacher saying that a student cant access the R:\ Drive have a look and the computer hasnt picked up and GPO

 

Has anyone had simular problems with this in concern or has any answers

Sounds like the old pull the network cable trick!

once it looses the settings it doesnt repick them up no matter what we do :/

What about if you remove from the domain, rename and rejoin?

Any errors in the event log? 1054 is a common one, can't remember the other (it'll be in Application or System, normally at start up)

 

Update network drivers and, if you are getting 1054, import this reg key

I can't say I've ever seen an XP computer just lose its GPO settings. Have you checked the event logs? Do you get any messages relating to Scandisk at startup or any other similar errors?

 

The odds are, it's probably registry corruption which is causing these type of problems.

The network cable problem was fixed as I recall in a Windows Update many years ago.

Was going to suggest this.

 

Give it a try, basically windows stops looking for a DC/domain before the NIC has finished negotiating with the switch.

Put this in a batchfile and after a restart it fixes gpos
