Can't open .swf Flash files on IE9 & Win 7 x64

Windows 7 Ent x64, IE9, Adobe Flash Player v11.2 64-bit

 

We can’t open .swf files in IE9. Flash content on websites works perfectly well, but not .swf files from the local hard drive.

 

I’ve tried changing the file association to the Flash Player executable, but can’t find it. Where is it?

 

A lot of Googling hasn’t found a definite answer, though some say that Firefox will work. I haven’t tried Firefox to open Flash files, as it’ll just make things more complex for the users.

 

Has anyone got .swf files to open on 64-bit Windows?

I use a SWF Player, there are plenty freeware ons out there if you Google for them.

You should be able to 'right click the file' and 'Open With' Internet Explorer.

 

Alternatively try Flash Movie Player Version 1.5 by eolsoft. Or embed the Flash file in a web page (probably the best solution if you don't want to install additional software).

Adobe have a standalone version of Flash Player too.

I think the standalone Flash Player Projector is probably the best answer. I'll try it when I get access to the 64-bit machine (it's the deputy Head's laptop).

I've just looked at it again and this time I could set the file association for .swf to Adobe Flash Player. It works.

 

The strange thing is that when I tried this last week, the only application offered was IE (which refused to play .swf files), and I couldn't find the Adobe Flash Player executable to browse to.

 

I've no idea why it's now working without me changing anything - possibly the user has run the Adobe Flash Player autoupdate?

 

Probably nothing to do with the OS being 64-bit.

I don't know why some machines will automagically play swf files and others don't but goo to know there is a offical consistent way of setting them up now

Is there a way to automatically get it to open the 32 bit version of IE located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe?

 

Or can you open the 32bit version of IE and paste the adress of the .swf file into it?

No. When I had the problem, neither of these approaches worked. IE would just offer to download the .swf file.

 

I think it may have been security setings in IE.

The problem has returned!

 

.swf files don't have a an associated application to open them. I think the Flash plugin isn't registered with IE.

 

To deploy Flash, I've just pushed out the msi without any mst modifications.

 

I remember with earlier verions, we had to create an mst to set a property IEXPLORE=1 (or something like that), but I can't find any details on the web. Anyone know the answer?
