Ah....takes me back. Never had an A1500 but LOVED my A500 back in 'tday.....and my ZX Spectrum +2 before that. Oh the fun in the playground…arguing with the C64 and CPC464 kids about which was best (of course it was the speccy!) and then the same with the Atari ST owners. Got my first ‘PC’ in about 1994 I think…486sx, 4MB and 170MB hard disk from Tiny Computers. I believe it came with Dr DOS as the OS. I’m getting all misty eyed.

 

Sadly can’t fire up the A1500 as its strange PSU is missing.

I was given a Vic20 when I was 13, later bought a Commodore 64 then in about 1989 bought an Amiga A500. Then my first PC was a 486sx from Radio Rentals :-)

Mind you, seem to recall my first USB flash drive (a massive 16MB) being something like £50.

 

Anyone remember those 'duel format' cassettes back in the 8bit days with a different format on each side? Was handy for me and my friends at the time, would pool are pocket money and buy them (with Spectrum on one side and CPC646 or whatever on the other) and then...er....make a 'backup'. Looking back it was quite impressive what people managed to get out of those machines really with such little storage, processing power etc to work with.

Also in the issue is an article discussing IBM's plans to enter the micro-computer market, as they had previously determined it to be a waste of time and used 'mickey mouse' as a term to describe micro's.

I bought a word processing package for the Amiga, looked at the packaging and it recommended 1MB of Ram and an extra floppy disk drive. Having purchased said recommended items 512KB of ram to get a total of 1MB and installed I the loaded application, ok no problem. Typed one letter on a font which had to be loaded by the extra disk drive and an out of memory message appeared, I could do no more. A quick visit back to the computer shop and I purchased a 1MB module putting the total upto 1.5MB of RAM.

 

How's that for a minimum requirement.

I did stacks of GCSE coursework on an A500 (the 1.2 version with the decent keyboard, the 1.3 was tat) It could only take 1MB RAM max and word processed fine (not sure what package it was though). The extra floppy was obligatory really. although I spent most of my time using xcopy to spin out copies of BBS downloads ;/

 

had to do a quick search for the original xcopy !

Ah yes, the wonderful X-Copy. Wasn't that the one that made a great "boing" sound when the copy was finished? The sound of success with all those crucial backups (ahem). But then my profile pic shows my fondness for the golden days of the A500. Genuinely weird how a screenshot of an old forgotten app can make you feel!
