The other option is openELEC which is much lighter to start with, it's essentially an single purpose OS.

Yep, I run Openelec on my Athlon x2 as a dualboot for Win7, as it's main "non-geek" task is DVD/FTA/WEBTV, since we binned our license and went TV free. Got the plugins for 4od and 5od too, although they're buggy at the mo. Lovely little setup, booting/running happily off an old 1gb USB stick. Lets hear it for all the programs I want to watch of a tech nature with none of the junk..heh..

Oh well, plenty to do tonight - need photos for a competition, want to program my new Logitech Harmony 700 remote and of course get the R-Pi up and running, between that I also need to feed my family I suppose

You could always get one of ebay. The first ones went for £200+, but now they're an absolute bargain at nearer £100!

I could be well off the mark here, but a lot of the people who rushed to buy the first ones will be pleased to get the bugs to try and mend them! A bit like people who race old cars in the hopes they break down and they have to mend them......

well amazon have posted my wireless keyboard and mouse for mine lol cost more than the pi itself iirc lol

From the videos I have seen no it isnt. Lots of screen updating problems ect.

 

I think its more of a programming device or special projects.

At the moment, no, browsing is slow, I didn't even attempt YouTube! But your next quote...

..brings me to a point I want to make and @nephilim was probably hinting at - this is very early stages of development. At the moment, it works and that's all that matters, but I do think things will get better as the Debian arm is tweaked to the device. Obviously, we're not about to make these £25, 700Mhz ARM computers our main PCs! But look at what Android devices are capable of with the same power (albeit without driving 1080p displays!) - it can get better, but it isn't there yet.

 

Just look at OpenELEC; with a streamlined backend, this is more than capable of running XBMC smoothly with full HD video.

 

I'd really like to see if I can get Android running on this thing mind you...

If it helps you find it, the browser is Midori (doubt you get many hits from that one!)

It's Debian Squeeze, unsure of the exact version I'm afraid but it's the latest on the Raspberry Pi site (here). I've packed it all away now but if you need more specifics I can update later on?

It also wouldn't surprise me if there was (eventually) a Pi-Nux once they get rolled out and en-mass development begins.

Yeah that was a shame, I'm wondering how it'll handle 1080p video on top of Debian... as you say, browsing was slow! Hopefully I'll get time to do some more tests tonight (got Arch on it last night but didn't even get as far as setting up a GUI!)
