Microsoft System Center 2012 released to volume-license customers < ZDNet Microsoft officials are confirming System Center 2012 is available to volume license users, as of April 1. They are declining to provide dates as to availability of the product to other customer groups, saying that they will have more to say on that front in mid-April at the Microsoft Management Summit. I’m not sure exactly when the suite RTM’d, and it seems Microsoft also is not commenting on that. Among the System Center products making up the 2012 family are System Center Configuration Manager 2012, which is going to enable Microsoft to better manage iPads and other non-Microsoft devices; System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 ; and a hybrid on-premises/cloud management portal known as Microsoft System Center App Controller 2012 (codenamed Concero). Microsoft execs have said there will be two System Center 2012 SKUs: Standard and Datacenter. Each includes the same bunch of eight point products, but with only two “operating system environments” (OSEs) supported for Standard, and an unlimited number supported for Datacenter. (OSEs can be physical and/or virtual machines, as explained by Tech Republic last year.) Microsoft is playing up the “single bundle” concept as a way to simplify its private/public cloud message. At the highest level, Microsoft is emphasizing that System Center 2012 will allow customers to manage private and/or public clouds. The hope in Redmond is that by getting customers more comfortable with cloud-computing concepts — like self-service, elasticity, automation, etc. — that they’ll be more amenable to moving to the public cloud (at some point). Now it's RTM'd though I wont be able to use it as I *still* don't have TechNet Everytime I go to do it something happens financially
sparkeh Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Personally I will wait a goodly while before putting this into production. As great as 2007 is it took a couple of SPs and an R2 to get it where it is. I would expect the same from 2012.
Gatt Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Got to admit - from he brief play I had with the RC - I didn't find it as appealing as 2007. There are some new features that are worth looking into, but it seemed to that the whole process for deploying software and updates seemed rather too clunky and problematic.. And I'm not a big fan of the whole Silverlight interface now being favoured by MS.. Lync possibly works ok with it, but not sure about SCCM...

Here is a download for deploying a complete ConfigMgr 2012 RTM infrastructure in either Hyper-V or VMware: One Domain Controller and one ConfigMgr 2012 RTM member server – Including pre-requisites like .Net Framework, SQL 2008 R2 SP1 CU4 (or higher) and IIS - all fully automated. Once configured, the total build time for the full ConfigMgr 2012 RTM lab environment is about 1.5 hours (on my laptop).

Spot on, remember the joys of SCCM before they added in Unknown Computer Support for PXE There was a good reason I stayed on SMS 2003 for about a year and a bit before moving to SCCM. As with a few other releases recently I'm going to sit and let someone else take the pain initially as 2007 does what I need to get 7 deployed this summer. This is basically a Windows Intune Client that enables you to deploy apps on your Windows Intune/SCCM managed devices.
