Recommend me a core?

My new block was cabled with 50/125 multimode om3. I've not tried it yet (block not finished), but I have these modules.

The 10Gb modules limit the operating temperatures for the unit, and its really a heatsink with a gbic stuck on it.

Teddy: If you've specified to your cabling installers the wish to go with 10gb in the future they should spec and install somthing relevant.

We have a 3COM 4060 Fibre Core Switch..

 

Solid as a rock

 

12 MTRJ Fibre Ports

 

6 GiG Ethernet Ports and

 

6 GBIC Fibre Ports..

 

All working and ready to go no adding blades or anything (apart from GBICS)

 

Cost around £5000

 

This is 2 years old so I am sure there is an upgrade..

The reason we got this is that ther Cisco switches were not value for money.. over priced and over hyped...

 

3COM and HP have good just as and if not better than CISCO at a much lower price...

My experience would lead me to believe that 3Com are of lower quality than HP switches. I've had countless firmware problems in the past, as well as actual hardware failures. Never had a failure with an HP switch.

TeddyKGB, you mentioned about connecting to Netgear - we have a Procurve 4865A as a core switch and its connected to Netgear switches in the comms cabinets (GS742T's mainly) with mini GBICS on 62.5/125 fibre. It works fine, but Netgear GBIC modules won't work in the HP switch. So we use HP GBICS in the Procurve, Netgear GBICS at the Netgear end, all works fine, and saves a bit of cash as the HP GBIC modules are significantly more expensive than the Netgear ones.

We have two main buildings, each with a HP5308 as a core switch. We put OM3 between these buildings as that's where any future 10Gb would go. Shame the 5308's aren't due a 10Gb module!

 

Have a look at HP's web-site for the throughput on switches. The 5400's are outrageously faster than the 5308's (we only bought ours 2 years ago). There may also be a limit PER MODULE, which is why 5308's do 4 x 1G-T, and 4 x 1G-SX modules - that guarantees 1Gb throughput per server/link.

 

Any one out there use Single-Mode fibre?

If any of you do decide to go for CISCO for god's sake backup your IOS and startup-config. It's always a shame when someone is configuring a switch and needs to start from scratch and accidentally kills the IOS.

if you can afford it go for 2* HP5406zl and Dual home everything. It will remove your networks single point of failure and shound do you until around 2015 unless something else comes out. the only other option is the full blown routing switch but they are mega expensive
