Viewing recently created/uploaded files on network

Hi all,

I work at a school and we always have an issue as I am sure most if not all others schools do of staff and students continuously uploading/creating files, and using more and more space.

I would like to find a way to view files that are created/uploaded to the network on a daily/weekly basis.

Does anyone know a simple way to do this or a program that collates this kind of data?

Thanks,

Matt

Would DIR /O-D work?

It's by no means perfect, but it's a start.

Although you'll have to manually do the week-by-week from the dates it lists off.. And there's no way to know if a file's really-really-old but still being used occasionally (if you're looking to purge some files to make some room).

Just do a search by date modified in windows 7 file explorer.

I do it all the time with an extra size filter to see whats happening on our file server.

Yes this is a start thanks, may be able to work something from this and make it more in depth.

I use this way to, however was just hoping there was something else that maybe even showed files being created real time or something like that.

I posted a reply in another thread which may be helpful here:

You can get FSRM [File Server Resource Manager] to E-Mail you when a user exceeds a preset limit on the usage of their home folder. You can set multiple triggers: E-Mail me when they have used 50%, 65%, 70%,...

Depending upon how many users you have and how close to their limit they are you might get lots of E-Mails but it is another approach and might be worth a look.

FSRM can also be used to prevent students saving EXE, BAT, COM,.. files to their home folders. Very useful.

Thank you very much both of you!

I will definitely have an in depth look at both of these. I can see them both playing some part in gathering useful information and applying restrictions.

You may want to look at SpaceObServer from JAM Software (www.jam-software.com) if you have SQLServer available as a backend. I haven't used it, but I do use their TreeSize Pro product on a number of our servers, which is a similar product that lacks historical reporting/tracking. I've been using this for years on my windows servers and it's a solid product with a good feature set.

I have a similar problem, and this program does not give you a solution, but I thought it would be useful to let you know in case it helps you. I used it a lot, and it can tell you where the biggest files on the shared area are located. WinDirStat is the name of the program, very small executable that I have on the D:\ drive of every server and run it every now and then to analyse what the users are putting on the shared areas and why, for example, there is a increse of 3GB in the backup from one friday to the next!
