I would say for us 70% of Impero usage is by the tech department, 30% classroom for us. The classroom/lab use is shrinking because as we are moving largely to Chromebooks and Impero's Chromebook client is not working for us. So probably Netsupport Manager.

It's painful but I am in the same boat. Looking at NetSupport as well as some Chromebook specific ones like GoGuardian since that is where the growth is for us.

We're currently running Smoothwall that is up in March of 2017 which we will not be renewing. I'm looking now and will likely return to my previous filter which was an iBoss.

Also might want to block Chromebooks from updating in the Admin console if you have any of those. Updated Chromebooks are starting to trickle into my office. Device management >Chrome >Device Settings >Auto Update Settings

In looking at the process, the upgrade is supposed delete old_chrome.exe after the process completes. I guess I just managed to catch it on a machine.

@Sheridan: I believe the upgrade process archives the prior version as old_chrome.exe in the same directory as your Chrome executable, so you should be able to use that.

Just to add a bit the developer working on this said that the fix should be finished today or tomorrow. Once it is fixed it will go out with the next release. They expect this bug to be significant enough to warrant a rush release, but no fixed date.

If anyone has downloaded the current version of Chrome - Stable Channel release 47.0.2526.73 released today and is also running a Smoothwall with NTLM authentication, I was wondering if you are seeing any issues? Currently with this release we are no longer getting NTLM "pass-through" or automatic authentication in Chrome. Any sites not on our authentication bypass list are prompting for a username and password. Internet Explorer and Firefox are fine, as was Chrome before this afternoons updates (46.0.2490.86). I am just trying to figure out is this is a global issue or something specific to our configuration. Thanks!

You may want to look at SpaceObServer from JAM Software (www.jam-software.com) if you have SQLServer available as a backend. I haven't used it, but I do use their TreeSize Pro product on a number of our servers, which is a similar product that lacks historical reporting/tracking. I've been using this for years on my windows servers and it's a solid product with a good feature set.

If actually distributing Office to staff, I would agree that HUP is a great option. If staff WAH rights were only exercised through remote access to a TS hosting Office, you would mitigate the distribution/key problems and would be more or less sure it's work related use.

Work at home rights may save you quite a bit here. If you're under a School Agreement, I think you are covered assuming you have licensed the primary work machine for all applicable CALS. If you've just done Select or Open, you at least have Office covered. RE Impero -- we're using this on all 1250 of our machines. It works fine over VLANS but auto-discovery of the server won't work -- you'll need to set the IP address of the server in each machine. Not a big deal and there's a utility to do it for you.

From my experience, IT in US public schools tends to be managed at the district level. Some schools (especially in larger districts) will certainly have dedicated IT staff. Building level administrators will have varying levels of control over budget/platform/software selections depending on the degree of control asserted by the central office and the overall structure of the district.

I am the Network Admin for a small district in central Pennsylvania. We have about 2000 kids (Pre-K through 12) and 225 staff in 2 buildings thankfully in a campus, so no travel. Total system count is about 1250 computers, roughly 800 desktops and 450 laptops - all Windows XP. Fifteen servers (physical...about 25 when you include virtuals) running 2003/2008. Network is primarily Nortel/3Com, but I am moving toward HP. The buildings have 24 pair of fiber running between them so no WAN issues. I have about 175 3Com (Trapeze) APs off of two WX4000 switches for wireless. Outward facing we have 100MBs MPLS fiber, with 16MBs internet, 4 MBs Internet 2, and the rest dedicated for a statewide educational network which is in development. My department consists of myself, a comp/av technician, and two lab aides. Our district also has a full tech coach who works on tech integration/in-service and works closely with me. I'm his pseudo-manager; but he technically is still an elementary teacher (1 course- LEGO Robotics, lucky guy). I generally put in a 50+ hour work week during the school year; usually much more in summer as we rush to re-image all the labs, recycle old stuff and deploy new equipment. I'm in the same boat as everyone else...if it has a plug or batteries, it's my responsibility to buy/fix/replace it. I'm primary software support/DBA for the financial systems, SIS, transportation, food-service, library, nursing, etc. I also have a bunch of in-house stuff that I wrote and maintain. We are also the district's AV department. Major projects I'm currently working on include replacing our SIS as our existing SASI system has been end-of-lifed. We have ongoing projects with the Pennsylvania's data warehouse implementation and Classrooms for the Future initative which is trying to provide a laptop per desk in every high school four-core classroom. The job is stressful but I do enjoy it (most days) and I have a great team of people that I work with.
