Hi there,

I have stupidly agreed to allow two 15yo boys from the secondary across the road shadow me for a week in June, one of there Mums is a teacher at my base Primary School.

I had a student last year, but he was based at one of my other schools and shadowed me for 1½ days, which was fine as I showed him a bit of everything.

So, I just wondered does anyone have any idea of what nice things I can get them to do? I am thinking its about time the serial numbers were updated! :)

What about mouse, monitor and keyboard cleaning :)

Show them the network and the servers and make them create a Network Topography!! may come in useful!! Or get them to create a network using virtual machines etc!! :-)

ask them what they like doing, then spin it to your advantage.

eg.

"i like building computers" = "cobble a computer together out of these broken ones, then install edubuntu for little kids to play with"

"i can make excel\access stuff" = "make me a special excel/access thing to catalogue my serial numbers. then scan them in with the barcode scanner my minion"

"i like the internet and playing games" = go home

If they start being little scumbags, dose them with valium ;)

I might have to try that with some of the staff in this place.

sounds alright, i did my work experience in year 10 at a record shop, that was pretty cool. In year 12 i went to a recording studio that was awesome, the memories are a little hazy though.

Ask any teachers if they would like ICT support for Year 7 or 8 lessons using ICT and give boys a timetable of those lessons they are supporting for the week.

This will give them some structure and can have a real positive effect on the lesson especially if the teacher is a little ICT phobic.

The one I had last year showed me all the proxy bypass sites that got through the filter. They were blocked pretty quickly after that. However I admit I used them once or twice to view some blocked forums.

i use proxy bypass sites all the time :p ive even got a firefox addon called phproxy - inbasic you click on the little icon and it redirects the blocked site through a proxy server in one click.

I did my 2 week work experience at a University's IT department (helpdesk). Basically i served staff and students with helpdesk problems, and did pc maintenance ie, helping move monitors round buildings. pc checks. Which was log on, any spy ware?, check add remove programs for something that shouldnt be, check internet works, check it can print, and so on. Spend a day with Operations who look after the running of the servers and users, so looking at network structure, and doing odd simple management jobs. Spend a day with Infrastructure, who setup servers and cables, looking at the cabling how the network works.

It was a very enjoyable 2 weeks and productive as i am now employed by said university, with them paying for my degree, when i finish alevels this year.
