Classic Radio Shows

Anyone still listen to any classic Beeb radio shows? My old man got be hooked as a nipper and at 30, I still fid myself listening in the car to some old classics. The main ones for me consist of Dad's Army, The Navy Lark (John Pertwee is awesome in this) and The Clitheroe Kid. I often check out Radio 5 on the iPlayer as they always seem to rotate some good shows like Steptoe & Son and others. Anyone have any other good recommendations for must hear shows?

Aye, Hitchikers is a great one for use of sound effects, and is properly paced for a radio show as well - it is, after all, its original incarnation. I know MP3s of it can be sourced if you look around... /shifty eyes

Stephen Fry's "Saturday Night Fry" series from the '80s is the best thing in the world (it's been proved by scientists). Stars SF, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and others. 6 episodes, each 30 mins. The "You Can Speak Strom" sketch is a masterpiece.

you can actually buy the first 2 series at least as mp3 cds from BBC and got the rest as straight audio cds though been converted to mp3 and as soon as i finish the terry Pratchett book on tapes in the car thats next. Love having a usb port in car

Hancock's Half Hour - I have loads on cassette, most of which I recorded in the 1970s. I also swapped for the missing ones. A couple of years ago, I was given the all the Hancocks converted to MP3s and cleaned up. If I listen, I'd rather listen to my cassettes. Interestingly, some of the rare episodes have dropouts in the MP3s, which exactly match where the dropouts are on my cassettes; these dropouts were due to bad reception. So my recordings have come home, albeit in a different format.

 

If you really want old shows, I have a couple of episodes of The Spike Jones Show from the 1940's.

We bought the radio show on CD, its 6 hours long, as is the journey to Cornwall for our hols. Made the trip a lot less tiring

I can't get my wife into speech radio but I love it? Does anyone remember listening to the Jimmy Young show? Does anyone remember Sherlock Homes when it was as an afternoon play on Radio 4 in the 90's my mum use to record it so I could listen. I have to say that BBC radio stations are the best there is nothing on the commercial stations like them. Who needs an I pod when you got BBC radio!!
