Power Over Ethernet

Having a bit of a problem with these....

Ive bought this for work, brought it home to test and doesnt work, well to a point anyway. My house has 2 circuits. One for the main house and one for the extension. Unfortunately the power over ethernet will not work over 2 circuits going through the same distribution board. At work we have multiple distribution boards and it doesn\'t work with those but fortunately we found some spare plug sockets that were on the same circuit.

 

If anyone has got 2 circuits and can get these things to work or can recommend any that work over 2 circuits, please let me know, as this would superceed my wireless connection.

You mean 'Ethernet over power' not 'Power over ethernet'

 

I would guess that it is the same problem that X10 suffers from - there needs to be a low impedence bridge between the 2 circuits IIRC (someone was talking about this on socialdiscussion.com in response to a question I posted). I would contact the manufacturer and see what thay say.

Nope, because you are transferring ethernet over the power line. Power over ethernet is the use of cat5e cable to provide power to devices.

Ebuyer have just group those products into the same gategory, they're not advertising that product as PoE.

These are Powerline Networking Products not to be confused with PoE.

They normally work well enough as long as they are on the same loop.

They will work across distribution panels.

They will not cross phases.

They do not like trailing sockets.

 

I have one in my front room plugged into my wireless router/switch the other over 180ft away at the other end of the garden in the summerhouse/workshop.

 

It works perfectly during the day however due to the electrical activity that takes place at night, lights, tv's, cooking, dishwashers etc they will not sync up and the link fails.

 

So if yours won't work I would guess they are either faulty or you have a source of mains bourne interference that simply knocks them out.

PS.

 

I noticed that the Netgear HDX101 range (these are not compatible with standard powerline adaptors) now has a repeater mode so the distances can be increased or coverage extended in difficult circuits.

So I plugged one in to a socket in my kitchen and now the link to my workshop works all the time!

It's gonna always be a bit hit and miss though... get a jcb and dig yourself a fibre channel.. tehehehe..

 

I'm suprised your house only has two ring mains, timbo. Is it an older house/older wiring? In this house for instance (rewired 20 or so years ago) has a upstairs ring main, a downstairs ring main, a kitchen ring main, and then a seperate 40amp feed for the detached garage. I think you'll find that on newer electrical cabling, it's probablay alot easier.

 

I couldn't see it working at work - we're in SCOLA buildings that went up in 1969 - and probablay still have most of the electrics from then, too.

I have used the Netgear stuff in a manor house which is dis-board to dis-board to dis-board and you can get there its just a lot of trial and error, and itwas only the 85mb ones
