Possible UniFi convert

A local school kindly lent me a 3 pack UniFi APs today, took 30 minutes to set up all 3 with free controller software. Getting good remote desktop access even through thick walls and the 3 APs covered a large portion of the school(say 9 classrooms) although a test on one netbook so its early days..but impressive so far considering its £150 for a pack of 3.

Vs around £200-£300 per access point for other brands plus controller and licensing.

Let´s wait for another 3-4 weeks. Then the new Ubiquity Pro access points will be available. Unfortunately I cannot find any data sheet. But it will get 3x3:3 MIMO and simultaneous dual band support...

I have an existing Sonicwall access point that the iPhone can't connect through a thick wall. Yet i was streaming youtube with it on the UniFi at the same location.

 

Only thing that dealers of Extricom, Meru and Aruba say about the UniFi is ah but they fall apart after 18 months.

 

Well, i think for the price i might take my chances!

No-one who accepts a standard school order will sell me any (And I want to buy 12 of them ASAP)

My last two cases (20) went this morning, a container arrives in Spain on Sunday it will be a week before the stock filters through.

 

This is why, one of the big outfits Wifinity rolled out 348 of them....

As I said - its finding a supplier who will deal with me at all so I could at least put them on back order

 

I got a pack of thres by using my own credit card and claiming the money back but auditors don't really like that sort of thing!

PS Its a good job I only want these and a Raspberry PI - imagine my frustration if I wanted an ipad3 as well

SimpleSi you can order them from the likes of Insight, but they take about 12 weeks to get hold of them.

 

It would mean you could use a normal supplier and jsut have a back order though which may be better on paper for the school.

I blame M25man for all the shortages - if he'd kept his mouth shut about them I'd still be buying Buffalo APs, installing WRT-DD and spending half my life configuring each of them separately.

 

But for the same money, I can configure a whole school in about 20 mins but its taking half my life to get hold of some more!

Thanks for all the help sourcing them - I've now got quotes flying in from all over

 

I think we maybe need to look at efficacy of the Edugeek purchasing section vs peer-peer help

I'd just like to repeat the thanks to EVERYONE who came my rescue over sourcing their last remainder stock of them. I believe some might have got into trouble with the Edugeek overlords and I'd just like to re-compense them for any knuckle-rapping they might have received at trying to help me out (at little financial gain to themselves!)

 

I have repeatably tried to find a supplier (both here on Edugeek and approaching retailers direct) without any previous success whatsoever

I'm also looking to convert from a H3C system only 3 years old! - Can I buy Unifi and use it in conjunction with another system?

 

Just wondering if it can see the power, channel and strength from another branded AP but i'm guessing not hence why you use a controller?

The Unifi system is just that, a system. The controller talks to its own AP's and provides central command and control to Unifi radios.

Thanks for your reply, I couldn't really find the answer I was looking for....

 

I want to know if I could do a split migration over to Unifi - We don't have the budget to take out the old and put in the new. Ideally want to buy some Unifi's but want to know if this will cause me problems? Will the Unifi see the H3C AP and adjust its power accordingly?
