which printer drivers do you use?

I read in the latest pc pro about HP bring out some universal HP orinter driver!

 

just a quick question about HP printer drivers

which ones do you tend to use as they do a post script, pcl5 and pcl6

That's a good point but why do you use pcl5e as apposed to anything else ?

We've found 5e the most stable, and with PCL6 it will only print 1 copy of the document no matter how many you specify.

I found that with PCL6, i do use post script on our colour ones because of some error with printing seperate colout layers in Publisher 2003 requiring it. But PCL5e mainly. Or my built in MacBook drivers hehe, but no luck connecting my mac to a hp 1010 tho lol

Generic postscript drivers. Linux print server converts the generic postscript to whatever the printer uses (although PCL gives it a bit of a headache sometimes).

Have to agree about the PCL5e. By far the most stable. PCL6 seems to be causing lots of issues in FMS at the moment too for some reason.

i have always tended to stick with pcl5 except on our colour printers were i use postscript

I tend to use whichever driver works!! I've found different printers work better with different drivers. Most of ours are PCL5e, but some use PCL6. I tend not to use postscript drivers, I've found them un-reliable in the past.

 

I've recently had a major problem with the latest version of the HP driver for their 3600 printers. After installing it on our print server, whenever a workstation connected to it they couldn't see the properties page for the printer, and also when they printed, the printer would randomly leave items off the page e.g the grid lines in excel. Rolling back to the old driver sorted it out, but I had to go round each workstation that was affected and manually delete the updated copy of printer driver that had been downloaded from the server, a time consuming task I can assure you.

I was recommended by a HP techie to use a PCL 5 driver as the PCL6 ons cause many issues.

I seem to remember and issue with PCL6 drivers and Office. Which is mad as if you create a printer driver the one thing you want to really test it on is Office

Thats a good question, I remember the first time i installed a printer i tossed a 50p coin, to decide which one to use.
