I've got a colo'd server with Mythic-Beasts in there Cambridge DC which I've setup as a OpenTTD server. The address is openttd.matt40k.co.uk. Server password is: edugeek. Let me know if anyone wants to change the server settings etc.

Just be aware I'm still playing with the settings so advice etc would be gratefully received and until I figure it all out, it may change.

Nice! I love this game and lost many hours to it. :D

EDIT - Some of the cities on there have grown enormous already!

You might want to beware of removing the password. There are certain unscrupulous people who resort to level crossing crashes and map sinking to ruin the game. :)

I ahvea spare TS server. I say tongiht we get as many people as we can, jump on to it and shift some pixels around the map. :D

I've restarted the server and the game - lower loan I'm afraid, towns don't grow as big and vehicles break down. Also the servers passworded - password is edugeek.

I restarted after it became impossible to realistically build any transport (unless you had a few hundred million like a few of the companies did). I've got the save if anyone wants me to load it back up :)

From what I've seen, most OpenTTD servers restart every few hours - days, depending on the number of people, so it may be worth creating a schedule to do it instead.

Try this if you want a chat whilst you play. It's my own server that comes with my BF3 Gameserver:

I think you might be right. Reload at 04:00 each night?

Whaaaaat! After I have spent 100 years building my vast empire and owning 75% of your companies **s!

It depends - when do most people go on? If people are connecting during the day, by the time people get home from work, they will be stuck in the same situation again.

Also, how about a larger map? 512x512 becomes crowded very quickly.

Try to make it quick to load, I tried the largest size map but then you had to wait an age to download the huge map. Let me know if anyone wants access to the openttd.cfg.

Good point. My tests at work had a 2096x2096 sized map taking about 60 seconds to load on the LAN, so over a net connection, its going to be pretty bad. How does a 1024x1024 map fare?

Have been playing this a bit single player. Conclusion: I suck.

Any advice? I don't like trains much as they get lost and the signaling is a bit opaque... but is it possible to turn a profit on a road network?

Road profits are minimal really. Airplanes make massive profits - especially if you go for the 2500km/h jets.

Trains are great fun - but it can take a while to get a design down and working properly. Spent a couple of hours designing a central interchange and then RORO stations across the map with mainlines and branch lines.

The signalling works well, have you looked at the wiki for details? Loads of examples on there.

I had a nice little mail/valuables company going. :D

For signals, the OpenTTD Wiki is a must if you want to use them properly. There are two types, block and path. Block defines an area that is impassable if another train ocuppies that block. Path will attempt to create a route from Signal A to Signal B and proceed if clear.

Path is easier to use as you place one facing the train at the platform and one at the junction where you want another train to wait (preferably so it doesn't block everything else!). Path signals can also designate a track as one way and they are defined by the signal with the white and red square on the rear.

Signals are a game in themselves but easy one you figure out how to make places to wait and know what signal should go where.

Just reboot the server, slight change to the settings, 1024×1024 loaded ok, but by connect kept getting issues losing connection, ok it recovered but… anyway, have set it to 1024×512. See how that goes. He is a screenshot of the final results.
