Automatic restart on WSUS clients problem

Dear all

 

I have installed a WSUS server with Active Directory. I have enabled group policy in Windows Update

"No Auto-Restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations". But still windows

is restarting after installation of updates on clients and server itself . How to resolve this issue thanks.

Was there a user logged in when it restarted? If no one is logged in then it will restart.

If you force update deadlines in WSUS, the server or workstation will force through a reboot to complete the installation.

thanks for your excellent reply but if i approve to install an update with no deadline how much time is required for installation

It takes as long as it needs and installs updates slowly. Typically it takes days depending on the number of updates.

Hi, you could try WuInstall. It allows you to start windows updates on demand and you can also specify if you want a restart or not. It is a command line tool and you can download it from their website, just google for wuinstall.

• No annoying reboots during work
  
• No hold-ups on Microsoft Patch Day
  
• The installation progress can be displayed and one can set time limits for installing updates

• One can temporarily bypass WSUS, which can be useful if one wants to check for the availability of a certain patch that has not yet been downloaded to one’s WSUS server.

So , it's like WSUS, but in a command line (and so less intuative to use). Which you sell? To people who already have WSUS?

I found .NET framework updates tend to misbehave and ignore the GP restart setting - I've seen a whole ICT suite restart itself simultaneously! Our original .net files are installed via MSI not WSUS and I think this causes problems too.

 

Check through your logs (On the Local Machine they are here: c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log) and see if it is one particular update causing the problem. If so, disable it and put it in the naughty corner until you can install it in a controlled fashion.

I find that with some updates it reboots even with the reboot option disabled in gpo. It appears to be ones that change essential components. I have never found a solution to this and have had to live with it as updated machines is more essential than the occasional reboot.

Yay, finally fixed the problem with WSUS....
