jinnantonnixx Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Three minutes... a week? A few relatively short bursts of intense exercise, amounting to only a few minutes a week, can deliver many of the health and fitness benefits of hours of conventional exercise, according to new research, says Dr Michael Mosley. But how much benefit you get from either may well depend on your genes. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17177251 Surely not? I'll watch the programme tonight, but the inner skeptic says 'No Way, Pedro!"
Steve21 Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Think it depends though, reading a bit more of the article: You get on an exercise bike, warm up by doing gentle cycling for a couple of minutes, then go flat out for 20 seconds So it's only a few minutes of high intensity, but also lots of "warm up" And the results after a month of the author: My insulin sensitivity had improved by a remarkable 24%, which was extremely satisfying, but my aerobic fitness had not improved at all. So don't think it's really a "replacement" for normal excercise, just certain bits as such hehe. Will be interesting to see what happens with it over a longer trial, not just a few weeks. Steve

witch Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Obviously 3 minutes a week is a bit extreme but the benefits of HIT have been known for some time. If you do the same thing at the same level for a long time the health benefits are minimal and it is much better to do short bursts of activity interspersed with resting phases. This way, instead of running for, say, an hour, you can run for half an hour and get the same benefits: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): Best Cardio to Burn Fat | BuiltLean.com Apparently you get an *afterburn* effect as well
Greenbeast Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 witch is right, my friend (a personal trainer) was well versed in high intensity training and was coaching me about 5 years ago. Works for muscle building too, i only ever (and he still trains this way) do a maximum of 10 reps at the highest weight possible, and that can be once every couple of weeks too (or longer), the gains are pretty impressive.
JJonas Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Hmm three minutes.. Do I have to put the pizza down while I do it?
Greenbeast Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Hmm three minutes.. Do I have to put the pizza down while I do it? depends how vigourous the activity is
BassTech Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I do HIT 5 times a week in the GYM, 30 minutes of the cross trainer at about 9mph average speed - feel a lot fitter and lost 9lbs since January
sonofsanta Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I saw that story, and thought "Great! I'm alright then" and then thought a little longer and realised I probably don't even meet 3 minutes a week of decent exercise these days :/ I'm also studying Llap-Goch, it actually sounds better, and probably just as effective Is that Welsh Muay Thai or something? "I'm going to kick your head in boyo I am..."
Earthling Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Is that Welsh Muay Thai or something? "I'm going to kick your head in boyo I am..." No, no, no. You're missing the basic principles of the discipline. 'Surprise' and 'Attack'. 'I'm gonna kick your head in, Boyo' would be classed as a warning, thus removing the element of 'Surprise'. No seLf-resPectIng Llap Goch Buttie would make such an elementary mistake. Who beat the Eng-lish?
X-13 Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Is that Welsh Muay Thai or something? "I'm going to kick your head in boyo I am..." Not sure if joking or misunderstood what it is... Who beat the Eng-lish? *Eng-lich Talking of beating the English... All I can think of it Family Guy. I play Peter Griffin, a heroic warrior who defied the English to free England from the English.
sonofsanta Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Not sure if joking or misunderstood what it is... Is not reading link because rushing past thread and thinking being clever when really being rubbish :/
X-13 Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Is not reading link because rushing past thread and thinking being clever when really being rubbish :/ It's a Monty Python thing. [incase you still haven't read it.]
