How to make windows 7 actually work properly... part 1.

Having just spent the best part of the last 6 weeks hunting down and testing every hot fix relaing to Offline files, Group Policy (/preferences), Log on times, kernel and tcp / ip, SMB 1 & 2 WMI, powersaving and other miscellania some chap at Microsoft goes and releases a nice easy list:

Here's one more update that helps:

A multithreaded application might crash in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

 

This lot basically sorts out most folder redirection / offline file problems that are not relating to poor GPO setting choices.

 

Not redirecting APPDATA has also helped.

 

Hope this is of some help to some people.

Thats good to know. I didnt realise there was a fix for the bug that caused folder redirection to fail if a previous user had clicked offline mode. That issue has been a niggle ever since we moved to 7.

Spend ages getting everything working only for an windows update to s**** it all up.

I agree it is frustrating as there are many bugs we have to live with. Windows 7 SP2 isn't going to be a million miles away, bearing in mind Windows 8 is due out at the end of the year.

One more for the latest Offline Files fixes:

"An unexpected network error occurred" error message when you try to browse a DFS folder in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

So none of those hotfixes have been rolled out as standard updates? Absolutely shocking if not, especially as some look so generic e.g. the Group Policy Preferences slowdown...

That's right, none of these have been rolled out by Microsoft. Only available as a pre-SP2 fix and released properly when Windows 7 SP2 is released. It is bad as these problems must affect a good percentage of 2008 R2 / 7 networks.
