Make\Model of Servers?

I would go along the lines of:

2x Servers

2x intel xeon 6c cpus

48gb ram

2x300gb sas

4x600gb sas

Both servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Hyper-V in a Failover Cluster.

Hyper-V Virucal Machines:

DC01, DC02, MGMT01, MGMT02, APPS01, MIS01

------------------------------

1x Server

2x intel xeon 6c cpus

48gb ram

2x300gb sas

4x900gb sas

This server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard as a File Server

take out most of the ram and stick it in the server below (mail server), file server really doesnt need alot! (4Gb MIN!)

------------------------------

1x Server

1x intel xeon 4c cpu

8gb ram

6x 600gb sas

This server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard as a Mail Server (Exchange Server 2010)

I would not be happy that somebody else other than me had decided to order new servers.............

Aside from the last server with 8gb of ram having or using the 600gb SAS drives, why not use the last one for file server and the one above that for mail ( exchange or whatever )

sorry all Dells

2x 710

2x 610

We have off site mail, which i hate. And if ref to other people buying ours servers, i couldn't agree more..... but sometimes its a handpalm scenario. still better than the core-duo we had delivered for the job from "PC Planet".

Didn't you know that a home desktop with lots of ram will be able to server the schools 900+ clients. Anyway thats another story and it gives me high blood pressure!

thx for your in put guys.

I find it interesting how a school decides to buy a server or servers, doesn't consult the technician or network manager, but then expects them to magically setup/configure/migrate to 2008 R2 and Windows 7 clients.

The fact you're going to be expected to setup these servers, I just find it extremely odd that you've had no input or say into the make or specification, or whether they're actually any good for job.

i wouldn't say no input..... more like

"We can't just run a home pc, it doesn't work like that. we need server hardware with high spec cpus, lots of ram and lots of hdd space. Dell and HP are good brands."

ultimately, its the schools decision in our scenario. the best we could do is get them for a cheap as poss. which i think we've done very well.

I have built servers on Core 2 Duo's, but I agree, for 900+ clients that would be pushing it.

A Xeon easily has enough power, but memory, hard disks as well as network speeds are also important.

Total overkill imo

Was about to say, 48gb for a mail server? Sweet chariots of fire, are people emailing eachother entire DVD collections every second? Or is Exchange THAT bad? If it needs that much, I'd be ditching it quicker than a celeron windows Me PC found running the MIS system...

Anyway, there's plenty of setups I could suggest however without knowing much more information there's little point as it stands.

As we don't know your situation with regards to procurement it's hard to say but I would still say that as the people responsible for the IT services I would have still expect you to have more input into the decisions.

Regarding what people think regarding the configuration perhaps you could outline the services you expect to run?

DHCP

DNS

WSUS

SIMS

FOG (on a linux box or maybe could vm?)

FILESERVER

SOPHOS

WEBSENSE

CASHLESS CATERING

was looking at app-v also.... but still need to do more research on this.

thx for your input

Do you have a physic domain controller or want additional virtual ones?

Ben

At the mo we have one physical Controller. We have never used virtual servers before but are willing to use them. the servers will be running 2008 r2 Ent also

thx

Total overkill imo

You could in that case split or share the RAM between the mail server and the other server ( which will be used for all the virtual servers ) and leave the file server with 4 or 8gb...... ?

I have just bought a new HP Server with 2 16 core chips and 32gb ram :) I am thinking of VDI'ing some machines or virtualising some servers.

16 core?

I have some of the Xeon 6 Cores (hyper threaded) so that the server thinks it has 24 cores :)

IME if you are going to be visualising (especially if its going to be clustered) 4 hard drives isn't going to be enough. Admittedly we dick our servers with multimedia but we have 2 file servers with 6 10k disks in each and they can't even cope with just serving files. Our hyperV box has 8 15k disks....

But then if you are coming from a desktop PC to that spec...
