The teacher has some podcasts on her ipod which she wishes to play the class. What sort of problems did you have in mind that I'd be facing?

Podcasts are only MP3's so if they are on her iPod thats half the battle of actually getting them sorted. If she hooks her iPod into a new install of iTunes it will be wiped anyway so she would lose the podcasts anyway. Hook into it like a pen drive, copy them out and play them over the network. Much easier and less problems

Forgive the newbie question, but I'm not an ipoder - the podcast is just a standard MP3 file, so she can just copy it into her MyDocs and play it from there, right? Or possibly even play it straight from the ipod.
Geoff Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 iPods have a standard 3.5mm stereo jack. So no problem there. IPods don't work like normal flash devices, you can't access the music with anything other than iTunes. Unless you use 3rd party firmware like Rockbox. It's probably easier to go back to the site the podcast came from and download it directly to the PC. If you want to subscribe to Podcasts from a PC but don't want something heavyweight like iTunes, I suggest Juice. http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php

With 3 iPods in this household... a fresh install of iTunes on a new laptop hasn't wiped any of them! It will only wipe if you set it up to automatically sync with iTunes. set it for manual and it's fine. Lin

If you try and plug an iPod into iTunes that isn't the iTunes install that originally put the music on then iTunes will want to set up a new link. If you say yes then it will wipe the iPod to set up a new link. WEll this is my understanding. It may have changed recently but I wanted to have my iPod linked to home and work pc and it was a big no no. @Geoff: I'm sure I have accessed the music section of an iPod using Windows. Some trick such as plugging the iPod in waiting for an error message and then opening my computer. With the error message up you get a removable drive that can be accessed as anyother. I'll dig around.

There are cheap mains-powered and battery powered ones available that produce sound quality plenty good enough for broadcasting a PodCast in the classroom The ones my kids use at home (far too loudly!) seem up to the job and they bought them!

BKGarry Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I was Toying with the idea of using itunes in music, at the moment they put their projects on the shared drives as mp3's and then the Head of Music moans about going there to play them, even though he has the shortcut straight to the area. I was going to purchase an AirPort Exress With Airtunes and let them broadcast to it, but the only problem is it can be played from any PC with it installed on the network.
GrumbleDook Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 An idea might be to host iTunes on a server and allow it to be shared (password protected). I have only done this to be used on a handful of machines and it was not too much of a hassle. If you want multiple people to use the same iTunes library at the same time ... it just does not work like that. A bit of a pain when you want to create a bank of royalty free sounds for students to be able to use in their media projects. I am also starting to play with AppleTV. We have one that will go to Science during the year so they can pull down videos of experiments that we will be videoing. Partly it is a proof of concept, but partly it will also allow them to play with something different and see what they can make of it.
Arthur Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 What about using Floola or SharePod? These programs can saved to the iPod's hard disk and run from there. Both will allow you to then play music from the iPod on any PC it is connected to.
Joedetic Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 In our rooms we had speakers mounted either side of the whiteboards with an amplifier plugged into the PC and phonosockets mounted on the wall for additional inputs. If you've got something like that maybe plugging the ipod in directly would be more appropriate as opposed to the software route. This way you can garuntee the kids are listening to the podcast as opposed to playing around and listening to whatever if they're using headphones.
