DHCP Appliance

One of my lovely primary's is after a small DHCP Appliance - as they have no server. I've looked at ADSL Routers, and a few access point that do it, but they need to be able to set a seperate gateway/dns server...

 

Any thoughts?

There's been threads on mini-ITX boxes recently if you do a search. These can be used with open source apps like IPCop, Smoothwall and Endian Firewall to give you a proxy/filter along with your requirement for a DHCP server.

 

These machines are small and pretty tidy looking - of course an old box stuck in a corner would do the same job but would be bigger and uglier. Might be worth considering? Tom_Newton can probably advise best.

I use Static DHCP Server running on a win98 machine at most of my primaries. I also utilise the same machine as a simple file server.

It runs IP Cop which is a little more than you need but it has a full DHCP server which can be easily configured as such: http://www.ipcop.org/1.4.0/en/admin/html/services.html#services_dhcp

Another vote for a low-spec ITX box - doesn't need to be anything fantastic for just running DHCP.

Any old box + Ubuntu + DNSMasq works for me.

Yes... I was hoping for something adsl router sized and adsl router priced.

What networking equipment do they already have? If they have a decent managed switched or a router of some kind there's a good chance it's got a built in DHCP server..

Hmmm... i wouldn't be suprised if it's full of 10meg hubs...

No Win98 - what sort of primary are you running there

 

OK - not tried this but my home Buffalo WYR-G54 Cable Router does DHCP and allows you to configure the WAN side IP address/Gateway and upstream DNS servers.

 

Its nice and small

I've got a Linksys AG241-UK ADSL modem/router which also allows settings for custom gateway and no more than 3 DNS servers.

i agree with geoff Ubuntu works good with DHCP

If you have any Cisco routers about the place they make nice DHCP servers.

 

Just to throw a spanner into the works you could try FreeBSD and ISC-DHCP. Worked nicely for me when i tried it

Should have thought a cheap & cheerful dsl router should do the job - no necessity for the "outbound" side to be plugged in, but you'd have to get one where the dhcp server was adequately configurable. Something that'll run DD-WRT praps?
