Well done to whoever did this website ! It's really nice. I have been watching website baker for some time, simple, quick and easy which is why I imagine it will become popular as soon as more templates become available.

Checkout http://www.plone.org - it's quite a heavy CMS (used by ebay) and the backend can be a little daunting but the front end is VERY easy and I have my staff trained up on it. It also has good permissions levels security, so you can say who can edit what.

Figure this is worth putting in here as the security side of things is a big aspect to consider.

 

Be careful to check for security exploits and the response time on some of them... phpnuke is not alone in this area but my experience is that nuke has shown itself to have a number of problems.

 

As a mod writer and maintainer for phpBB2 I can also atest to the fact that you need to be careful about any mods/hacks that you install as well.. I fell foul of SQL and variable injection vulnerability exploits in my own code and there's plenty of others who've hit the same issues so avoid new code and look for established code and whether it's well maintained. Basically apply this rule on both the main package and on the mod/hack front too.

 

Just because you may be looking to an intranet site you need to consider that you have a community of students who include the usual 7337 h4x07s who'd love to take the school site down or gain access to private info.

 

Final point.. Where possible sign up to security or news email/rss lists so you know when updates are available and you can close loopholes quickly and with minimal fuss. Worth considering subscription to hacker sites too so you know when a 0day exploit has been announced (you can bet the more "effective" hackers in your school will) as many package communities have a "if we don't mention it they won't know" attitude to exploits which is rather shortsighted.

 

Realise that creates a bigger list of things to watch out for but it's less time consuming that looking for a new job or dealing with a heavily compromised site.

Yes. Bloody typical. There I am saying how great our host is and then this happens. To be fair, it is the first time we've had any problems and their homepage is suffering the same fault. I've sent an email so we'll see how long it takes them to sort it out.

@roland: I'm the maintainer of the Bishop Barrington website... the template used was originally 'andreas02' (on the Website Baker template repository) but with switched menus and tweaked styles, plus a load of extra PHP stuff that I had to put in that is specific to our website. I can let you have a copy if you need it but you should manage OK with the one off the WB site
