Admiral208 Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Morning everyone The clock on our main DC is about 5 mins slow from the rest of the clocks in the school. All of the workstations and other servers get their time from the DC. If I change the clock on the main DC, am I going to screw anything up? Thanks James

Thanks James I think I've done it before without a problem. Note: I am taking 0% responsibility if you do it and something breaks. 1
pooley Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 There can't be a time difference of more than 5mins between server and workstations, so what I did was change the time on the DC by 3mins initially and then a week later make another change, this gives all the workstations a chance to contact the DC and update their time. 1

This is funny, what I'm actually reading is that if I make a change, you will take 100% responsibility Thanks fellas
Landi Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I was under the impression you can have a difference of 15 mins tolerance before server and client get upset, so i always change it by less then this and havent had a problem so far with a windows server based domain (2003/2008)
DSapseid Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Ive got this on my network as well atm was about to start a new topic. Mines 4 mins slow. Ive changed it on all the servers but it changes back!! Ive tried setting the time server on my dc that is set as times sever to my network to one that has the right time but it doesnt work. Any ideas?

Any ideas? Anything running virtualised? (could be getting time from the hypervisor) Any logs showing what it's talking to that's changing it back? 1

The buck stops with you. [if you know why I'm a failed experiment... I WILL give +Rep for being awesome/google savvy.]
Achandler Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 DSapied You need to find out where your DC is getting its time from, if it is virtualised then it will probably be the host, but you can disable the time sync function. Then your dc will use your time server again and your host will use your dc and it will all go good. We had a situation once where all our servers seemed to be getting the time from any DC they saw fit, who were in turn getting them from host servers, until a big loop was formed and noone was getting the time from somewhere sensible, I soon broke up that little party though! About 10 servers and between them they couldn't even count! 1
DSapseid Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Yes 2 of my dcs are virtualised i hadnt even thought that they were getting the time from the hypervisor!! I will check Citrix XenServer to see if the time on there is wrong!! If not i will look at the time sync on the virtual servers and turn it off. Thanks!!
DSapseid Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 XenServer is set to sync with the DC shall i turn it off and then set time manually?
plexer Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I have the same thing but I'm not worried at it benig correct as long as the servers and clients match that's fine Ben
DSapseid Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 im not worried its just annoying really! I use the clock on my pc as to when to go to meetings etc and i always forget its 4/5mins slow and am five mins late for meeting
kmount Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 If the hypervisor is set to get it from the vm and the vm from the hypervisor I think it will just loop. I tend to recommend a physical dc as your time provider for the whole network and point everything to that. That dc itself is then pointing to something on the outside to provide time for your whole environment, if the internet link drops and begins to drift or w/e at least your internal stuff is drifting with the dc.
plexer Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Get one of these: GPS Clock with NTP time server Ben
