What I really need is someone who has never used it to follow my instrutions and say which parts need more explanation or may not work on a particular distro, etc.

I am planning to do a complete clean install on VM so I will let you know by the end of the week how things go.

 

At first glance looks ok but if I look at it from a *nix noobs perspective whats has not been covered is getting the required files onto the nix box in the first place, I think there should be a requirement for PUTTY and WinSCP so those working in an M$ environment will be able to admin and file transfer the box easily.

I have read your document with great interest and plan to go ahead with this over the next couple of weeks.

 

One thing however you have written this guide refering to Debian Etch so I went to download the image and was assounded by the amount of choice although I did notice debian-40r0-i386-netinst.iso is this the iso that you use? if not could you point me and maybe others to the download link for the project. I am using an intel based PC for this.

Hold here looks bit closer find EzCacti has it installed as default...

 

So skips lot of config files and gets on with monitoring service bit.

You might want to mention about installing NTP/keeping the clock in sync. Kinda pointless looking at logs when the times are wrong.

do these config examples work with versoin 3.0? IVe got as far as getting it working with apache, cgis seem to work, just need to set up the monitoring now.

 

Going to be monitoring:

 

• 2x linux servers
  
• 1x win2008 servers
  
• 4x wireless access points (netgear unmanaged, if possible)
  
• 2x netgear media players (by ping only maybe?)
  
• 1x xerox network printer
  
• 1x netgear wireless print server (unmanaged, if possible)

ok sorry for dredging up an old thread, but the wiki is a bit out of date now, bad links etc so once Ive got this working ill update it.

 

I keep getting a user denied when trying to access the cgi's, unless i disable the auth in cgi.cfg

 

Ive set my apache up a little bit different, as I run multiple vhosts, and as such have just made .htpasswd and .htaccess files rather than the access being contained in the conf. (ive also tried in the vhost conf but didnt work at all)

 

What username should I be using for the htaccess?

ah thats the ticket, I was using a username of nagios. Sorted.

 

Now I just need to figure out how to get it monitoring 2008 server and xp clients

Does anyone have use nagios to monitor a xerox phaser 611x series network printer?

 

Im not too sure if/how I can get nagios to report on its status?

It will hopefully have SNMP. I have a script I used to use for my 8100 Xerox printers but I noticed it works on other printer too including HP etc as the oids must be fairly standard numbers. I will dig it up for you. If it hasn't got snmp then hopefully it has some kind of status page which you will need to write a script to extract the relevant bits from the HTML page. It does have snmp, but on the web page config for the printer it talks about IP Trap Destination Address and stuff like that, and im not really too sure about... Ive not used snmp before..

You don't need to configure the SNMP trap address stuff.

 

Baiscally, you can either pull information (ike we are doing) or push information (to a central point for processing) with SNMP.

Is there an example config file for a xerox, I tried to use the sample printer one but thats for a hp and it shows the ping, but the other 2 reports it says it cannot get information, plugin not installed or something (the hpjd line)

Having just updated our nagios box due to hdd failure, I can`t make the previously working HP Procurve cpu load test to work.

 

We did upgrade from debian 4 to 5 and nagios 2 to nagios 3, but the config files were copied across.

 

All other procurve snmp checks work fine.

Any debugging suggestions?
