MarkBerridge Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I know this is not a mac problem I am asking about but I did not no where else to post. We are looking into buying a few iPads for staff here, but i need help on how to administer them remotely. I have found the iPhone configuration utility to preconfigure the devices but the other enterprise documentation Apple has is quite confusing. Any ideas?
ste1988 Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 If you don't have a mac mini server. i believe the config utility is the only way to get it done. Simply by creating the iPad with apps how you wish, then backing up to a machine and restoring to all the other iPads. If you have a mac mini server you can use profile manager, but i haven't got round to trying this set, so i can't comment further, managing iPads in school makes for an interesting discussion though. Have you got any iPads yet?
MarkBerridge Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 I do have 1 for the Head which I have already setup and in use. We only have a windows domain with windows clients here. I have looked at this Loading… but seems quite confusing to me, its a shame theres no programs built to help you out with this.
nickbro Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 You can try the iPhone configuration utility (works on any iOS device) iPhone Configuration Utility 3.4 for Windows, but it is basic
ste1988 Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Its pretty much expected that those profiles will be given out via the server, or by connecting the iPad to the server a choosing the profile for it. Although on that page is does say you can connect to the device to apply the profile, but writing the profile yourself will take some studying of those apple documentation. Although we had the server, we will used the iPhone utility, just because at the time it was well documented and profile manager was new. Depending on how many iPads, and how often you would have to change, settings, apps etc, would determine which one to go for. We only have a handful, so backup and restore, and then if anything goes wrong simply restore again. Then wait until enough setting/app changes mean a new image of all of them.
nickbro Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 How do you do users on iPads? This is the only bit I haven't figured out. We've just created one as a generic device, used the tool to lock it does (a bit), but I still don't know how allowing the kids on them will work (access to shared area/home directory, etc)

If/when we roll out to children, this will be the same, although i do believe using profile manage, you can have shares on them. as i said above we haven't got this far yet. but it will be interesting to see how you get shares on them, and how they authenticate etc
januttall Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Users? iPad doesn't have different users? Our SLT seem to think they do we have one for the whole school to share and use in the library.

Will tell them to use home access if/when our head decides she wants 30 of them for class use
MarkBerridge Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 It looks like you can use exchange to deploy OTA Profiles and lock it down but what about buying apps? Do you have to have a different Apple account per device or just 1? Also how is licencing apps on iPads, do you have to buy them app however many times you need per device?
CyberNerd Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Google apps has a remote management tool for ios http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TtDYpU4V4UQ
rdk Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 We have a couple of hundred iPads for student use across two year levels. We have not tried to manage them at all, and as far as we're aware it is so difficult as to be not worth it. We give each kid their iPad, then give each of them a $50 iTunes card and they download and install the required apps from links on our website. If they stuff it up, its their responsibility to buy a new iTunes card to get the apps. In Australia iTunes cards are often discounted and we've never paid more than $40 for $50 cards. You can create one iTunes account on one computer, purchase & download the apps, then sync all iPads to that computer but that would be illegal. iPads are meant to be individual devices and don't support multiple users on the one device. I am unaware of any way to connect iPads to shared drives etc, but could be mistaken.

Sean-OC04 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Share access is possible How To Wirelessly Access Network Shares from Your iOS Device - How-To Geek Ben Personally this way of sharing content is over complicated and the App crashes too often to be of any real use....there is better way of sharing content via a Windows or Mac server using webDAV 11. Managing learning with WebDAV on Vimeo You can always use your existing Exchange Server to manage the iPads but there are some limitations on what you can do with Exchange depending on the version you have... http://images.apple.com/ipad/business/docs/iOS_EAS.pdf
HodgeHi Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I would agree with Sean about the use of Webdav. It seems to be the best way of using the iPads with multiple users. If you have a VLE which can utilise webdav shares to store documents (I know StudyWiz does) then it can potentially be a great way to work. You can also use an app called webdav nav. This is more like a browser-based way of viewing webdav shares. I have experimented recently with the new iBooks author tool for mac and sharing it out using a webdav share which can be accessed via the webdav nav app, potentially allowing pupils to import the iBook I made into their own iBooks library.
