Which profile type for students ?

Currently on XP and the students have mandatory profiles. It works but can be a pain some of the tip.

 

Currently working on a Windows 7 migration

 

We have up to 6000 students pass through each year, what's the best way forward ?

 

I prefer a standard desktop \ start menu they can not change and can be centrally controlled.

 

Is local profile with folder redirected desktop \ start menu and a script to delete old profiles at log out ?

 

Staff will be getting roaming profiles.

I would go mandatory again, same as your XP setup.

Before I google, anything I need to look out for on Windows 7 over XP for setting this up ?

I would have mandatory profiles for the students because you have loads.

 

I would look into folder redirection for the staff and syncronise their home drive if they have laptops they use at home etc. Folder redirection seems to give quicker log on times for me.

 

Remember on Windows Vista/7 that when a user profile folder is created in the Users folder, a registry key is located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows NT > Current Version > ProfileList, and when you delete the folder in Users the registry key for that user has to be deleted otherwise they will log on with a temp profile.

I'm currently in the process of getting everything ready for a transition over to Windows 7 in the summer. I have just completed making new policies for student and staff lockdowns (removing network browsing, preventing unpinning items form taskbar etc.)

I would like to let you know that windows 7 profiles can be a bit more bloated then XP. That's what i have found out. I had experience with a computer with local profiles is not a good idea. It take 10 more longer to setup a local profile than XP does. This pissed of a lot of users in that lab.

Looking at that script, whats the key things to delete, I plan to have it deleting cookies, recent, history, office recent, java cache, flash player and oracel jar cash (after set number of days)

 

What about things like VB or Photoshop ?
