win7 anytime upgrade oddity

Ok, so the head has given me her sons new asus eee pc netbook, with win7 starter on it, and new, boxed copy of win7 premium.

 

anytime upgrade says it has failed due to being unable to upgrade the version of windows i have, to the version i have a serial number for.

 

The setup run from the dvd gives a similar failure notice.

 

I've just shut the pc down to boot from an external DVD drive to flatten the machine and start again, and it tells me not to power off the pc as it is upgrading windows, it has reset the machine 3 times and is now telling me it is running home premium, i can connect to home groups and all sorts that i couldn't before... seriously, wtf?

Isn't there two types of upgrades for Win7? Internal and external? If that makes sense.

 

Only certain types can be done from within the OS, others need to be done outside the OS? (May be mistaken, but sure there is something like that)

I'm not sure what's happened there. Starter's only available in 32Bit, so no direct upgrade to 64Bit.

 

It sounds like it's worked, but not smoothly.

Just to clarify, did you get this version of Windows 7 Home Premium?

what i have is this:

 

UPC Database: Item Record

 

which contains a licence code, a 32bit disk and a 64bit disk both of which, aparently, includes anytime upgrade.

 

The machine I was installing onto was an Atom based asus netbook with win7 32 home starter on it and i wanted to upgrade it to win7 32 home premium...

 

Any more ideas? I'd really like to understand what just happened!
