gshaw Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Just tinkering with my virtualised SCCM server today to provide a more robust method of deploying Office 2010 (and eventually 7) but looking around 2012 RC has been out for a while so wondering if anyone has taken the jump? I tend to avoid these major new releases until I've had a chance to play with it on a test network as SCCM in its current guise is working well for us but does look like 2012 has some nifty new features

With SCCM 2007 if you deploy some software to a collection, and then you have to rebuild a station at a later point, its not clever enough to detect that software is not installed and should be. Is this addressed in 2012? or have you not come accross that yet.

Interesting point and one that in theory could hurt us but hasn't as yet, remember thinking something similar a while back as re-imaging a system that's completed a Task Sequence is a bit of a pain as well...
synaesthesia Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 We are in final stages of testing, ready for a complete replacement of our CC3 network with SCCM 2012 this coming Summer. Deployment seems very easy compared to 2007 however haven't done enough to come across that yet. Will be resetting our test box to it's original snapshot for a clean install next week and will give that a go.

Looks vaguely similar in the installation screenshots I've seen but more importantly does it still require package files stored twice as a source and distribution point?

gshaw Posted January 10, 2012 Author Posted January 10, 2012 I never liked the Windows Update facility within SMS 2003 and still don't like it in SCCM either. I've kept WSUS for pushing out updates and ignored those areas in SCCM... imo it's one area that didn't actually make life any easier so left well alone

Like above - Im not keen on the Software Update Point feature either - I still let WSUS handle that one. Ive got 2012 up on another one of my VMs, and it seems fine. Big interface changes on the surface, but underneath you still find essentially the same dialogs and options. The logic is slighly different now, targetting towards users - but you can stiull target machines if you prefer (and I do).

TheScarfedOne Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Not really. Its running in a different domain. There is not a direct upgrade route (yet) for 2007 - 2012, so they are essentially separate. You can create a new primary site, and then add your 2007 as a child and migrate across.

gshaw Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 Hmmm as I'm sitting here fiddling with the SCCM 2007 install I've done for admin machines I'm wondering if I should just jump to 2012 and be done with it... our other network is stable on 2007 for now so this could be a good way of getting familiar with it before moving across... decisions decisions!
sven Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Any ideas when SCCM 2012 is actually released? Looking to get SCCM installed for deployments and Forefront Endpoint Protection management. I don't want to put SCCM 2007 in place, only for 2012 to be released not long after. Any ideas?
