featured_spectre Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Lovely school to work for, when on tour the facilities were fantastic, and the department office is very nice and spacious! The staff were all polite and friendly, and happy to answer questions I had. If anyone in the area is looking for a good job and place to work, this is definitely it!

michael2k6 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I can vouch for the Harris guys, in general. I think the East Dulwich site is one of the ones I haven't been to, but I've met a lot of the federation staff and haven't come across anyone I don't get on with yet. Every Harris Academy i've been to so far has looked like the kind of place I'd work. Mic My views in my posts are my own, and not representative of the company or its associates in any way.
IanT Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Hey Michael - how are you! - you was at beckenham during the summer with me, remember?
glennda Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 is this one of the schools taking up the Microsoft "School in a box"? Was tempted to apply but not sure now!
Saint Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) Hello IanT I saw your add, and would like to apply for the position, will it be possible to contact me via my email *removed* thank you Edited January 13, 2012 by witch

Slartibartfast Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 is this one of the schools taking up the Microsoft "School in a box"? Was tempted to apply but not sure now! Conceptually yes, but the Microsoft 'School in a Box' is not a standard 'off the shelf' thing - it's an umbrella term that covers many things. Out of interest, why would this affect your application?
glennda Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Because I wouldn't want to work under it personally. I like having control over everything and when there is a problem you know easily how to fix it. Plus personally I don't think it's 100% effective at the moment but that's my opinion and need not be discussed in this thread.

Going by your Profile your a ICT Technician and they dont have full control of a network?
glennda Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Going by your Profile your a ICT Technician and they dont have full control of a network? I have full control of everything switches/servers/desktops/phone system which is what I prefer. Having the ability to sit and look at probs and resolve. Personally that's the part of the job I enjoy - when it's all hosted online you lose that part of the job and its what I enjoy.
featured_spectre Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Contrary to popular belief, a LARGE amount of the working is hosted in the school, not externally or in the cloud. It is a good system they have, and very little is different from other systems I have seen. Infact the only difference I could spot (from the tour) was that they use MS Lync with the other academies in their system, whereas others all use a joined sharepoint system. (Although I may be wrong)
IanT Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 We use Lync and SharePoint across all academies, there's a number of systems we share and alot of innovation goes on, thats just one of the reasons why we are the best performing bunch of academies in the country.
Slartibartfast Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 In essence it's shared common infrastructure (Active Directory, Exchange, Sharepoint, Lync, more to come); if you're part of a Federation there's no point in re-inventing the wheel at each site - the model still allows for uniqueness and innovation at local sites and positively encourages sharing of best practice across the group.
gigbod Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Quick everyone look at BBC 2 on the normal television! Newsnight are using Harris Academy Merton as a way to discuss how the "quest for the 5 A-Cs at GCSE" is tempting academies to take pupils off the roll without having to exclude them - hence, the GCSE figures still look good, (since average goes up if you don't count those pupils who take zero GCSEs) but the exclusion rate doesn't go up. It's not having a go at Harris specifically, but it's interesting how fudging your figures now has a massive financial incentive attached - MIS expert's salaries to increase this year hmmmm.....
witch Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 This is going right off topic. Please start a new thread if you wish to discuss anything other than the job
IanT Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 bump bump bump! Applications close Monday!
nicholab Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) Information on the job there is a blue print set down for how an academy will function. All systems will be deployed to this model and this is what you will be supporting. (Ex Harris) Edited January 19, 2012 by nicholab
