Ideas Please

Hi All,

 

I'm after some ideas.....

 

One of the 6th Formers at the school where I work has asked if I can help him out with his Gold DofE skills section by being his Assessor (basically giving him tasks and prodding him along the way to develop his skills in a certain area). He's asked me as he wants to develop his skills in "computer networking" - the general term we gave for anything and everything to do with computers and networks.

 

Now I have some general ideas for topics to cover but he has to do this for 2 hours a week over 12 months!!

 

So I was wondering if you guys can suggest some topics/ideas/subjects that we can cover? I'd like to make it a mix of research and practical experience (as much for my benefit as well as his).

 

Any help given will be much appreciated

Suggest you look through the Cisco Networking Academy info at Schools and Instructors - Cisco Networking Academy - Cisco Systems

 

The course outlines and sample materials will give you a good idea of what he could cover:

 

IT Essentials: PC Hardware and Software might be the best one covering an overview of computer fundamentals and an introduction to advanced concepts. There is a data sheet showing what it covers and you might know a Cisco Academy in your area where you might be able to have sight of some of the coursework materials.

 

I have no experience of delivering or using the Cisco School Academy programme, but we took on a Junior Technician who had got this qualification at his local 16+ college and it was a good start for him

Give him an old desktop and a few different os disks and set him tasks - install windows and create and configure a domain (don't plug it into the network), install linux and setup apache mysql and build something webbased which could be of use?

As far as I know I'm still a registered DoE instructor/assesor/supervisor (not that I have read the latest manual) and I totally agree, you want an established framework to validate against, it makes it really easy to confirm and verify. I would suggest actually prepping them and making them (if possible) do the cert at the end of the learning period as a nice third party proof which they (the assessor) can easily sign off on with your written testimony that they have indeed spent a bunch of time (as spec'ed by the manual) doing the learning and assessment.
