Can anyone recommend me a good NAS for use at home?

 

Need something with more than 1 drive so I can raid it, not fussed if it is non populated just after some recommendations of what is good and what to avoid.

 

Mainly will use to store music and backup's of files from our PC's. I will also use it to store images of machines on there.

 

Also how do you control permissions on the NAS as I may not want my brother accessing all the files on it but want him to access parts, same with my Dad want him to be able to put his bits on there.

If you do a search on the forums you will see similar posts on this topic. I have a QNAP NAS at my home which i have used for a wee while now. they are very good peices of kit and i recommend them on a business level also.

I have a TS-239 Pro ++ with both bays having a 2TB Disk inserted.

I got one of the small HP servers with £100 cash back HP 658553-421 ProLiant MicroServer N40L now with a massive £100 cashback this month! | ServersPlus. Got my cheque this weekend!

 

I picked up a copy of Windows Home Server (bout £40) but you could pop freenas on there.

I have just bought an HP Microserver too, the price after the £100 cashback makes them really cheap.

at home I use a few QNAP's mainly 412's

 

Bad time to buy unless you already have the hard drives

 

I like the QNAPs but i think i will look at some cheaper options as i only use 5% of the features on them

Running a QNAP TS210 at home here.

iTunes and media serving to my ipad, Remote access via internet from work.

Easy on the QNAP. All part of the Admin console. Can set users, with access rights, which folders to share, password protection etc

I was looking at one of the HP servers but if I have something dedicated I am more likely to use it for its purpose. I am liking the QNAP stuff was having a good look last night.

I use a ZyXEL NSA-210 NAS server - Serial ATA-300 (came with no drive,, I had 2 x 500Gb drives from a dead Lacie NAS Box)

fab box, built in torrent client, web interface,,

was only £65 ish a few months back,, I have today seen them for less than £40 !!!

It also has a Media Server built in which things like iTunes can see.. Excellect box,, bit noisy but it lives in my shed so not an issue for me
