Hi All, Has anyone heard back from Iain regarding his web filter? If not is someone else able to send it to me ?

Thank you

I am struggling to get this working on a test smoothwall box i have.

I have got my Youtube ID from our school advanced settings page and have inserted it into the smoothwall box in the format X-Youtube-Edu-Filter: {YoutubeID} but i cannot get it working.

I have made sure that the youtube header is set to allow in my students group.

Check you've got the header right - you'll need to change the format slightly. Add a space after the colon.

e.g.

header code from Youtube

X-YouTube-Edu-Filter:fn_-zdfdfdfhdhedr

Header code to use in Smoothwall:-

X-YouTube-Edu-Filter: fn_-zdfdfdfhdhedr

edit: sorry - just noticed you had!

Have a look a this post to check if you have the header set up correctly. It needs to go in Content Modification rather than as a Block/Allow rule.

Heads up the latest update to the sophos web appliance v3.7.1 lets you setup youtube for schools as a general option under global policies

Awesome! I actually requested that feature with their devs.

Great to see it implemented.

Have a look at http://www.youtube.com/account_school while logged in on the school account. You can add accounts near the top of the page.

It seems to be picky in what it will accept. One of our teachers has a Youtube account and I've added his account no trouble.

I've created a Youtube account from a Gmail account (in the form [email protected]). I can log onto Yotube OK with it, but trying to add it in the http://www.youtube.com/account_school page just results in "! User not found". It's definitely a valid Youtube username! I'va also tried the Youtube user ID from the account settings page.

I've given up with this until Youtube can get this improved. I have reverted to the "block-all-youtube" policy we had before. This is just too kludgy to use in the real world. :(

It seems like its been implemented on a whim and they've got bored of it and just left it.

I've left it enabled on my network as its better than nothing but I'm taking the YouTube approch and I'm not going to support it.

Sorry if I've missed this in this big thread...

Has anyone managed to make their channel available on the YouTube for school website.

We have no problem with our staff and 6th form as we allow them access to all of YouTube but we've only allowed the lower years access to the YouTube for schools site. Problem is that when a student accessing the schools site try’s to view our channel they get the following message;

The content that you are trying to access is not available because it has not been approved by your school. Sorry about that.

Seems a bit rubbish that the account you're using for YouTube for school access then doesn’t automatically allow the content to be included as educational..? How do I approve…?

If anyone can help it would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Does your school have a YouTube channel? If so add the videos to a play list and sprinkle some fairy dust on it and hope for the best.

We've got a channel and a playlist for each subject. There is content in the playlists....

Is it really that flakey..? Someone must of got it working.

I'm afraid not then. Can you view the videos on a lower years account if you play it direct from the play list? If so that is the only way you can ever view the videos. I think YouTube have definitely given up on this one.

There are shed loads of videos on the YouTube forums about this issue.

For anyone using MS Forefront TMG (2010), I have written a ISAPI webfilter that will enable this feature. It also enforces Safety Mode, if required, for staff who have an authorised, unrestricted YouTube account.

Although I have written this for TMG, it should be easy enough to adapt to work on ISA 2004 / 6 (32 bit platforms).

If you would like a copy, send me a PM and I'll fire it off to you!

Iain.

Great stuff, Iain! It's a bit disappointing that TMG doesn't have the ability to add headers built-in - does plenty else, but never what you need!

(Like others before me, I need to clock up two posts so as to PM... About time I stopped lurking here and actually posted something!)

Same here. I would love a PM if you get a chance. Thank you for your hard work.

Ive just found out about youtube for schools, and looked at implementing it in our Fortigate UTM appliance.. but:

Dear customer,

There is no way to configure it right now. And I couldn't find any workaround.

It will be available on the new Fortigate OS5 , which will be released soon.

Please let me know if you need more information, or I can close this ticket.

Best Regards,

Hi Iain, I have sent you a PM but just realised I need two posts before I can email you? I have been looking all over the web for something that will do this with Microsoft Forefront TMG 2010 as the ISA Toolkit doesn't support it.

Thanks in advance
