The phone recognises your face and certain points in your face (so you could grow a beard or grow long hair / have it shaved off) and it will still recognise you. This ladies and gentlemen is on the Nexus Phone with Android Ice Cream Sandwich Give it the next itteration of iPhone/iOS and Apple will release it and the masses will praise Apple! Galaxy Nexus POW!

I'm sure facial recognition software will get better in the future (especially now that Google owns PittPatt), but I wouldn't rely on it 100%. I reckon it is quite neat (nothing MS haven't been doing for a while with XBox Kinect, mind you, so not a new big thing), but would only use it if it could unlock my phone quicker than entering a passcode or gesture.

LosOjos Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 What I think would be better would be an unlocking key, i.e. you personally select an item that you have to point your camera at to unlock the phone (with the option to just use your Google password should you not have said item on you). Yeah it wouldn't solve the issue that people could show the camera a photo of the object, but they'd have to know what the object was first...

When you have a 7 year old son, who wants to play the games on your phone, and a gallery of pictures that you may not want him to see, it makes sense to have an app that can lock certain things. Visidon allows me to choose what he can get into, and uses Facial Recognition for all others. As much as it seems a gimmick, it can be useful! And, YES, Apple will call it "FizzogRecog" or something, and Rory Cellan Jones will rave about it on the BBC website, and EVERYONE will think that Apple did it first! Siri was a third party program that you could download from the app store until apple bought it and made it theirs. So the software itself isn't new and exciting, it was around for ages until they pulled it from the app store to force you to buy a new phone. Face recognition was around, but now Google are using it, it will be touted as new features purely because its integrated into the system and not a separate download.
Guest Guest Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 After having a lock on my phone for a while now I would welcome it if it was reliable and not hackable. Typing a passcode is a chore. The pattern codes are too easy - I saw my colleague do his pattern out of the corner of my eye and instantly saw it.
