Most economic printers

Hello,

 

We currently have 2 centrally located OKI C5650 printers.

 

Am starting to see that the toner (magenta in particular) is running out pretty regularly.

 

Am wondering if anyone has had results with any good economical network printers.

 

HP?

 

Am thinking of changing these printers as they are costing way too much.

Do you have Photocopiers on site?

 

they are the best for toner yields IMHO and tend to me less then a penny a sheet

Just one thing that you may have already done but can say anyway!

 

Have you changed the default DPI on the printers? In many cases printer drivers set to the max as default (e.g. 600 DPI) - in many cases setting it as low as 150 DPI will look just the same and bring about a massive drop in ink usage.

+1 for photocopiers (even better is that it doesnt come out of my ICT budget)

 

We still have lasers dotted around a mix of HP and Samsung. I've found the price per page often relates to the cost of the printer i.e. a cheap hp 2600n (we have several and they are ok for us but I wont recommend them because they can be problematic for some people) only has low capacity toner drums (2k) but our ancient 4600n has large capacity drums which cost a fortune but the per page cost is lower.

We have tried all sorts over the years and the lowest we have found is the photocopiers that are contacted. You pay one price per copy and put the paper in. No maintenance or parts worries. Have a talk to your local supplier we use anadata.

 

One department in school have gone for a 3a printer under a similar contract and swear by it but its not quite as cheap but a lot smaller.

Ironically, we are paying more for photocopys due to an existing (non-IT) contract that we have. More expensive printers definitely cost less to run. I presented the following to management last year. Feel free to dispute my calcs. It won an argument in any case:

 

The College has a variety of printers and uses a number of different cartridge manufacturers. Some cheaper cartriges that we use cannot be guaranteed to print the number of pages detailed below. Costs do not include power consumption, replaced cartridges due to damage and technician time. Although the costs are 1.5p, 1.8p and 3.3p for different classes of printer - we believe the average cost is around 2.2p per page.
