My homework for school is to answer questions on a forum about connectivity.

I will not be able to answer very technical questions, but any basic queries which you need answering please do ask and i will attempt to answer some.

Jimmih - Here is one for you - How would you connect 2 computers together at home to be able to share files

Also to assist with homework (and cos I like to expand students knowledge):

 

What connectivity to the internet (ie cabling technology and data rate) would you suggest for a large secondary school who use a lot of online media content?

 

Suggest 2 alternatives to a costly direct point to point leased line to connect 2 medium sized secondary schools - you can assume any rate of data transfer you like (but to give you a starting point, assume one of low data transfer and a solution which could be put in place firewall to firewall and ISP independant, and the other, reasonably high data transfer and an ISP based solution).

 

If you can't answer those, let me know and I'll give you some information as to my thoughts.

I'm setting up a network at home, would you suggest wireless or wired connection and why?

 

I'm setting up a new computer suite of 30 machines, which may be used for media editting. Would you suggest wired or wireless and why?

@fiza - Those are basic questions depending on what level you are at (and the answers would also differ depending on what level you're at and level of detail). Please note the bottom line - if you don't know what to answer, let me know and I'll expand knowledge :)

To connect 2 computers together to share files i would use ethernet cables.

 

Willott I am afraid i was unable to even attempt your first question.

 

If you are setting up a network in your house it depends on the size of the house, if you live in a small flat or small house wireless should be strong enough to reach all corners of the house with a decent speed. However if have a much larger house a wireless signal from a single modem would struggle to reach areas of the house, therefore in that case i would go for wired.

 

If you are setting up a computer suite of 30 for media editting i would go for wired, because the amount data from media such as film is very large therefore i think you need the speed of wired to keep it quick enough.

 

I hope i got the right idea of the questions, please do correct them as i think it would be of great benefit to me.

I have a 4 PC network with a router. How do I set up a Terraria server on one PC and what address do I type in for the other computers, myself and my friends online to connect to it?

 

This is reeeeal simple one for you but very practical if a bit of a devil. ;)

I forgot to respond to this, so apologies...

 

1) For large data rates, cabling type tends to be fibre optic - this is less susceptable to interference so the signal can go longer distances than copper based means (ie ADSL etc) and carry more data more readily. For a large secondary school, the minimum I would suggest is a 100Mb data rate, however it may be cost effective (and future proofing) to get a 1Gb (1 gigabit) bearer and purchase a "CDR" or capped rate on this - CDR in this sense is committed data rate - ie you commit to using a certain data rate (usually averaged and taken at 95% of your use - in legal terms CDR at the 95th percentile) but can burst above this - for example, you could commit to 30Mb, but be able to burst to 1Gb, as long as you don't use more than about 9TB data in a month (30Mb/8bits*secs*mins*hours*30days)... however this doesn't seem to be how they like to run ISP fibre connections - for this they tend to put a cap on your bandwidth (so you can only hit 30Mb for example) - this puts slightly less strain on the ISP's systems as they can plan for the data that they'll receive - burstable data is slightly more difficult to plan for.
