Figure 8 to 3 pin adapter

Evening everyone,

 

Putting this in hardware. Seems the right place.

 

We have an Epson EMP-S1H projector hanging from the ceiling in my room. It is connected to a rather long figure 8 power cable. All good. Now this projector needs replacing but all the projectors I have looked at now have three pin. To save moving the mounting brackets we are hoping to stick with an upgraded Epson projector but this has a 3 pin

 

Does anyone know of a figure 8 to 3 pin adapter that I can purchase?

I didn't manage to find one , so i got a load of kettle to 8 adapters and use kettle cables to the projector now. Not that it helps i'm afriad!

Do you mean figure 8 to kettle style or clover leaf?

I don't think you can as the figure of 8 connector only has live and neutral whereas an IEC or cloverleaf have an earth connector as well as the live and neutral. If the projector requires requires a power cable with an earth pin then it should be wired up properly.

Using a figure 8 (two cables) to kettle lead or clover leaf (3 cables) will mean that your new device will not be earthed when it, clearly, requires earthing (hence the 3rd pin). As a result there is no way that this installation can pass a portable appliance test. Sorry Gareth, I'm afraid you're gonna have to rewire it with a long kettle lead.

Whats a PAT got to do with it?

Part of a PAT is a visual inspection of the installation and an earth test using the appliance's lead. (Or at least it was when I learnt it all those years ago)

PAT testing is not a legal requirement so doesn't make a blind bit of difference. You could technically run a seperate earth cable out of the plug but i wouldn't advise doing it (although it would be deemed as safe by an inspection as long as it is grounded properly)

Whilst not a legal requirement, it is often incorporated into school or LA policy. The fact still remains though, PAT or not, the use of an unearthed lead will result in an unsafe installation.

It does not matter about PAT testing, running a device designed to be earthed without earthing is dangerous and a safety/fire risk. Rewire it properly and save the hassle.
